How To Get Hot Food When Camping

Trail mix is the staple of any good hiking trip. The combination of protein from the nuts and carbs from the fruit and granola keeps you body moving down the trail without having to stop and with no mess. But sometimes you just want a hot meal, maybe even some meat. You can!

Here are 5 ways you can have a hot meal and meat on your next camping trip:

1. Camp Fire:

Its an old tradition. Gather up some wood, put some rocks in circle, and build a nice camp fire. Thankfully, the days of having rubbing two sticks together are gone. Between waterproof matches and pocket sized propane or butane lighters, starting a fire is pretty easy these days. And whats better than sitting around in some camping chairs enjoying a nice fire?

A little trick I learned a while back is that placing a ground bloom firework in the middle of the wood is a quick and fun way to start a camp fire. Also, if youre able to, bring along a lightweight metal grill grate. Otherwise, you have to hold whatever youre cooking over the fire. For smores, that isnt too bad, but if your boiling water, that pot can get awfully heavy after a minute or two.

2. Portable Propane Camp Stove:

A lot of camping areas, especially those in national parks, prohibit fires, at least during the dry season. Thankfully, there are some very portable propane camp stoves which are not too cumbersome to carry in your camping supplies and do a very good job of heating up your food. Be sure to bring along a lightweight pot and pan and some metal silverware for cooking.

3. Military Rations:

MREs have come a long way. Gone are the cold, tasteless military food bars soldiers had to force down in the old days. Today, rations have some very good tasting options, including meals with meat, and they can even been self-heated. Its done through a chemical heating process in the packaging. These rations heat the food to a piping hot temperature in a matter of minutes. Whats more, the heating process is usually specifically tailored to the meal so it cooks the food perfectly every time. Rations are not just available to the military. You can find them in wide variety of stores open to the public.

4. Canned Meats:

If you are going to build a fire or youve brought along a camp stove, what can you bring that has meat and tastes good? Any meat thats been dried or is in a can, will work, but canned meats are best for cooking. My personal favorite is chili. Chili has the added benefit of being able to be cooked directly in the can. If you have plain canned meat, you can kick it up a notch by bringing a box of hamburger helper (or tuna helper).

5. Catch You Dinner:

If you dont want to tote along a bunch of cans of food, why not catch some? Granted, most places you would camp do not allow the hunting of the on-the-ground wildlife, but many will offer fishing licenses. Bring along a portable fishing pole and you could have a relaxing time fishing capped off with some delicious fresh trout.

Camping doesnt have to be all trail mix and beef jerky. These days there are a wide variety of hot and delicious meal options to choose from.
