In a new relationship, the level and the length of communication can be confusing. Should you be talking to one another every night? Does it matter if it?s just a few minutes or should you be having lengthy conversations?

The choice is truly personal. Some people find that they need time to themselves and do not want to talk constantly. Others prefer to talk to their significant other daily so that they can share what has happened to them that day.

It?s a matter of personal preference. It?s important that whatever you decide to do, it?s something that you?ve talked about with one another. Make sure that you both know what the other wants and try to find a compromise.

Levels of communication usually vary during the different phases of a relationship. It?s okay if you don?t want to talk every day, but if you do, that?s okay too. Don?t berate yourself for your desires or feelings about the communication in the relationship. Particularly with long-distance relationships, making judgements about the amount of communication can be difficult.

Always make sure that you are communicating the big things with one another. If you could go without talking to your partner for more than a week, and you?ve been dating for at least 3-6 months, then you may want to consider ending the relationship. At the very least, take a strong look at the relationship you are in and if you really, truly want to be with this person. Nothing is worse than staying in a relationship when you don?t actually want to be with the other person. Sometimes your level of communication can tell you that. However, not talking every day or even several times a week, isn?t a sign that anything is wrong. It actually can be a sign that you both understand your relationship and feel secure enough in it to allow individual freedom.
