Tim Cook joined Apple because even 'when customers got mad at Apple, they'd continue to buy'

It's epic storytelling time at AllThingsD 10 as audience Q&A has begun, with Apple CEO Tim Cook opening up on why he came to join the company in the first place in response to a question from Lance Ulanoff of Mashable. To hear him tell it, an executive search firm came calling and he wasn't pressed -- until five minutes into his meeting with Steve Jobs. We'll let him tell it:

It was a very interesting meeting. Steve had hired an executive search firm to find someone to run operations. They kept calling, and eventually I said 'Okay, I'll talk.' I flew out Friday on a redeye for a Saturday morning meeting with Steve. The honest-to-God truth, five minutes into the conversation I wanted to join Apple. I was shocked. Why did I want to do it? He painted a story and a strategy that he was taking Apple deep into consumer when I knew others were doing the exact opposite. I never thought following the herd was brilliant. He told me a bit about what would late be named the iMac, and I saw brilliance in that. I saw someone unaffected with money, and that has always impressed me when people do indeed have it. Those three things to me to throw caution to the wind and do it. I went back, and resigned immediately.

Did I see the iPad and iPhone? No. What I saw was this: Apple was the only technology company that I knew of, including the one I was currently at, that when a customer got mad at a company, they'd continue to buy. If people got mad at Compaq, they'd buy Dell. If you were mad at Dell, you'd buy IBM. But an Apple customer was a unique breed; there's this emotion that you just don't see in technology in general. You could see it and feel it at Apple. When I looked at the balance sheet of the company, I thought I could do something in turning around a great American company.

Whether you call it the reality distortion field or simply a strong brand attachment, it was enough, along with Steve Jobs' vision, to lure Tim Cook to work at Apple even when things weren't going so well back in 1998. Can he keep the shield generators running as CEO? Time will tell.

Chrome Berlin - PRO Laptop Bag

"Hey Sara," I called to my colleague while exploring the expansive space inside Chrome's Berlin - PRO laptop bag ($220 direct). "See if you can fit into this bag!" My joke fell flat probably because the Berlin doesn't look nearly as big as it is from the outside (or perhaps because my petite co-worker had had enough of me that day).

The Chrome Berlin - Pro easily fits laptops of any size, plus all the cords, cables, and accessories you could ever need ? plus a change of clothes, your lunch, a tablet, and much more (read on to find out what I crammed into it). At 15 by 20 by 10 inches (HWD), when fully expanded, the Berlin's volume measures 25 liters!

The "pro" part of the name refers to the fact that this bag can be used by professional bike messengers, and the Berlin part, I presume, is a nod toward the very German looking style. The Berlin is a no-frills bag, available in black or gray, with a dark red lining. It's coolly edgy, but uncomplicated.

Massive as it is, the Chrome Berlin manages to be comfortable, even when you pack it to the brim because it balances weight both vertically down your back, as well as horizontally across the front of your shoulders and chest by way of a thickly padded strap. The strap fastens with one of Chrome's signature seatbelt buckles, which is very cool, but contributes a considerable amount of weight to the bag's 4.5 pounds. Two additional straps?one of which tucks away into a Velcro slot when not in use?can further secure the Berlin to your frame when the load you're hauling seems otherwise impossibly cumbersome. With the Berlin, it can be done!

To test the bag's capacity, I first packed roughly 18 pounds of clothing (I didn't want to mess with anything fragile just yet) into the Chrome Berlin - PRO and rode seven miles on my bike to a friend's house. This test turned out to be more about my own strength than the bag's, because the Berlin did its job to a tee. On my second trial, I loaded it up with a 13-inch laptop in a sleeve for extra protection, a camera that was also housed in a padded case, an iPad with rubber bumper, my purse, a smartphone, several cords and chargers, and a sweater. Not only did I tote this load without buckling, I got it through airport security, too! For the few weeks that I rode and walked around with the Berlin - PRO, there was nothing that it wouldn't fit or that I couldn't carry if it was in the bag. One Berlin owner says he once carried a chainsaw in this incredible bag! I don't doubt him for a second.

As much as you can pack this bag to the gills, the Berlin - PRO doesn't have a cushioned compartment specifically for a laptop. Two Velcro-secured pouches do a better job of protecting smaller electronics (think smartphone sized), but notebook owners should definitely use a protective sleeve.

Cycling commuters who carry a lot of stuff can't go wrong with Chrome's Berlin - PRO bag. Car and subway commuters will undoubtedly find the Berlin way too big for their average needs. At $220, the bag is an investment, but one worth making if you fit the Berlin profile.

Yahoo ? Cities with the most homes in foreclosure ? Scottsdale ...

According to data released last week, the worst effects of the housing crisis are beginning to wind down. RealtyTrac?s latest report shows the number of foreclosures in the U.S. in April is down 13 percent to 188,780 from 219,258 a year ago. However, some of the largest cities in the U.S. continue to lag behind the rest of the country, and still have long to go before the housing crash has fully run its course.

RealtyTrac published the number of new home foreclosures in April in the 50 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S. Of those 50 areas, 10 had more than double the national foreclosure rate, which is one out of every 698 new homes.

In California?s Inland Empire metropolitan area, the rate was more than triple that. Using RealtyTrac?s foreclosure rates and and home price data from Fiserv Case-Shiller, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the metropolitan areas with the highest foreclosure rates.

The continuing high rates of foreclosures in some areas is a disturbing trend, says RealtyTrac?s vice president, Daren Blomquist. Although the national foreclosure rate appears to have peaked, he explains, the massive number of remaining properties yet to be foreclosed may continue to hurt the U.S. market in the long term. The large number of new foreclosures ?means that distressed property sales will continue to represent a large portion of overall sales for at least the remainder of this year, which in turn will keep a lid on any robust home price recovery,? Blomquist says.

After reviewing the markets with the highest foreclosure rates, it is clear that regions with the most foreclosures to date are the ones worst affected by the housing crisis. Seven of the 10 metro areas on this list had among the top 10 largest declines in home value from their pre-recession peaks. In six of the 10 regions, houses lost more than half their value in less than six years. In Las Vegas, home prices plummeted 61.8 percent between the beginning of 2006 and the end of last year.

24/7 Wall St. examined RealtyTrac?s latest foreclosure figures of new homes for April 2012, as well as the changes in the number of new foreclosures from a month prior and a year prior. In addition, we reviewed historical, current, and projected home price changes, provided by Fiserv-Case Shiller.

These are the five cities with the most homes in foreclosure:

5. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Ga.

Foreclosure rate: 1 in 298 homes

?Number of homes: 2,165,495 (9th most)

Foreclosures (April 2012): 7,271 (4th most)

Home price decline from peak: -35% (14th largest decline)

By the fourth quarter of 2011, home values in Atlanta fell 35 percent from their peak. The Atlanta area has the ninth most housing units of any region on the list, and the median price of these homes was just $110,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011. Things may be on the upswing, though ? the number of homes in foreclosure fell 11 percent from the prior month.

?4. Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville, Calif.

Foreclosure rate: 1 in 277 homes

Number of homes: 871,793 (23rd fewest)

Foreclosures (April 2012): 3,147 (12th most)

Home price decline from peak: 54.7% (5th largest)

With home prices down 54.7 percent from their high at the end of 2005, the Sacramento area registered the fifth-largest decline in home prices. However, foreclosures are down by 39.01 percent from last year, when April 2011 had 5,160 homes in foreclosure. Additionally, the number of foreclosures also decreased by 26.7% from the previous month, from 4,294 to 3,147. Fiserv expects home prices in the area to rise 6.3% annually through the fourth quarter of 2016.

3. Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, Fla.

?Foreclosure rate: 1 in 273 homes

?Number of homes: 2,464,417 (5th most)

Foreclosures (April 2012): 9,031 (3rd most)

Home price decline from peak: 54.2% (7th largest decline)

The Miami metro region topped all Florida regions in the number of new foreclosures. It also ranks third in new foreclosure rates among the 50 largest metros with 9,031 foreclosures in April 2012. While foreclosures in the area decreased between March 2012 and April 2012, to the tune of 9.2 percent, the future appears gloomy. Prices in this region are forecast to fall another 3.8 percent between the fourth quarters of 2012 and 2013.

2. Las Vegas-Paradise, Nev.

?Foreclosure rate: 1 in 249 homes

Number of homes: 840,343 (22nd fewest)

Foreclosures (April 2012): 3,378 (10th most)

Home price decline from peak: 61.8% (the largest decline)

Home prices in Las Vegas, the poster child of the housing crisis, plunged by 61.8 percent from their peak in early 2006 through 2011 ? the greatest decline of any of the nation?s 50 largest metros. Although new foreclosures in the Las Vegas-Paradise region declined by 66.1 percent to 3,378 over the past year, the number of foreclosures in April represents a slight increase over March, when 3,301 new homes were in foreclosure. Making matters worse, prices are expected to fall by another 3.3 percent between the fourth quarter of 2012 and the fourth quarter 2013, according to Fiserv.

1. Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif.

Foreclosure rate: 1 in 213 homes

Number of homes: 1,500,344 (14th most)

Foreclosures (April 2012): 7,049 (5th most)

Home price decline from peak: -56.6% (2nd largest decline)

?

As of the fourth quarter of 2011, prices in the Riverside metro area fell by 56.6 percent from their peak, the second largest drop among top 50 metros. In addition, this region is first in terms of new foreclosure rate, at one in 213. While the number of homes (1.5 million) ranks 14th of the 50 largest regions, the area?s new foreclosure count for April 2012 reached 7,049 ? fifth highest overall. It appears, however, that, the situation is improving; between March 2012 and April 2012, foreclosures dropped 10.8 percent.

Why chemotherapy fails

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

The fight against cancer is not won in a single battle: Long after a cancer has been beaten into remission, it can return. The reason for this is under debate, and much is unclear. New research led by Weizmann Institute scientists shows that, at least for one type of blood cancer, the source of cancer recurrence is in a set of cells that do not proliferate as quickly as regular cancer cells, and thus able to survive chemotherapy. The findings, which appeared today in the journal Blood, have some important implications for the future of the war on cancer.

Cancer involves a breakdown in the mechanism that regulates the pace of cell division. When this happens, cells divide rapidly, leading to unchecked growth that overruns the body. The most common chemotherapy drugs are those which specifically attack cells that are undergoing rapid division, and these, indeed, often destroy all the cancer and cure the patient.

But there are also quite a few leukemia patients who go through chemotherapy only to have the cancer return. Why does this happen? Several explanations have been proposed. One is that the chemotherapy does not kill every last cancer cell, leaving a few to continue dividing out of control until the disease returns in full force. A second explanation proposes that chemotherapy does get all the regular cancer cells, but there is another type of cancer cell that hides in the body. As opposed to the rapidly dividing majority of cancer cells, these undergo slow division, enabling them to evade the chemotherapy drugs. These insidious cells can give rise to new rapidly-dividing cancer cells, which is why they are known as "cancer stem cells."

Which explanation is correct? The debate is an important one because, if the first explanation holds true, improving upon the existing treatments might help, while the second implies that a completely different approach to treatment will be needed to root out the slowly dividing cancer stem cells.

To attempt to resolve that debate, the team of Prof. Ehud Shapiro of the Weizmann Institute's Biological Chemistry, and Applied Mathematics and Computer Sciences Departments, worked with scientists and physicians from Rambam Medical Center and the Technion, both in Haifa. They used a method of reconstructing cell lineage trees that has been developed over the past few years in Shapiro's lab. This method is based on the fact that the genetic material in different body cells accumulates unique mutations during cell division, and these mutations are passed on to daughter cells during cell division. By comparing mutations, one can map out cells' detailed family trees, and thus determine how far back they share a common ancestor. The end product of this analysis is a tree that reconstructs the genealogy of the cells from their earliest forebears at the base of the tree to the youngest cells at the tips of the branches.

To reconstruct the cancer cell lineage tree, the team used two sets of blood samples: the first taken from leukemia patients right after the disease was diagnosed, and the second from those patients who had undergone chemotherapy and in whom the cancer had returned. The researchers could then trace the relationships of the recurring cancer cells back to see if they descended from the original cancer cells. The lineage tree showed that, at least in some of the patients, the source of the renewed cancer was not in the rapidly proliferating cancer cells, but rather in cells that were close to the root of the tree. These cells had only divided a few times. In other words, the cancer arose from cells that divide very slowly, making them resistant to the attacks of chemotherapy drugs.

Shapiro: "We know that in many cases, chemotherapy alone is not able to cure leukemia. Our results suggest that to completely eliminate it, we must look for a treatment that will not only eliminate the rapidly dividing cells, but also target the cancer stem cells that are resistant to conventional treatment."

For City's Teens, Stop And Frisk Is Black And White - WNYC

One in five people stopped last year by the New York City police department was a teenager between the ages of 14 and 18, according to a WNYC analysis of recently released police data.

Eighty-six percent of those teenagers who were stopped were either black or Latino, most of them boys.?

Last year, there were more than 120,000 stops of black and Latino kids between 14 and 18. The total number of black and Latino boys that age in the entire city isn?t much more than that ? about 177,000 ? which strongly suggests a teen male with dark skin in New York City will probably get stopped and frisked by the time he?s graduated from high school.

The debate about stop and frisk?s racial disparities comes down to opponents who say it racially profiles and supporters who say the people stopped fit the descriptions of most suspects. The conversation, until now, has been dominated by lawyers, politicians, police officials and community leaders.?

But ask junior high and high school students around the city, from affluent to low-income neighborhoods, and most appear to agree on one main premise:?who gets stopped and frisked has everything to do with where you live and what color your skin is.?

?We?re A Bunch of Skinny White Kids?

Last year, the NYPD stopped teenagers more than 140,000 times.

But at Stuyvesant High School in Lower Manhattan, which is 96 percent Asian and white, you would be hard pressed to find even one kid among the 3,300 students who has ever been stopped and frisked.

The students here, at one of the city?s most elite public high schools, are known to excel at academics. They are the eager students, the ones who raise their hands in class.?But ask them how many of them have ever been stopped and frisked by police, and what you get back is a sea of blank stares.

Victor Cai, is an Asian-American freshman who lives in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. He said it?s clear why he?s never been stopped and frisked: He doesn?t look like the part.

?They?re like hooded, in hoodies. They wear, like, very baggy clothing,? said Victor, describing someone who might appear suspicious to police.? ?And they?re African-American or Hispanic.?

Victor and his classmates point out a few other differences.?

We don?t look suspicious. We don?t look like scary criminals or terrorists, or whatever.? We?re very unthreatening people,? said Benedict Bolton, a 15-year-old freshman at Stuyvesant who is white. ?We?re a bunch of, to be honest, skinny white kids.?

Cross over to Brownsville, Brooklyn, where there aren?t many skinny white kids, and the story of stop and frisk suddenly becomes ?A Tale of Two Cities.??

Since getting stopped for the first time when he was 12, Tyari has wanted to become a criminal defense lawyer. Ailsa Chang/WNYC)

The demographics of Teachers Preparatory High School in Brownsville are 99 percent black and Latino.? It takes only five minutes to find a group of 14-year olds here who say they have been stopped by police two, three, even seven times.

WNYC mapped the exact coordinates of every recorded stop of a teenager in 2011.?It turns out the densest hot spot for stop and frisks of teenagers last year was along a four-block section of Brownsville, next to Teachers Preparatory High School, near the Marcus Garvey public housing projects.?

Brownsville is in the 73rd precinct, which has one of the highest violent crime rates in the city.

In this area alone, kids between 14 and 18 were stopped by police nearly 8,000 times in 2011. Within a three-block radius around Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, police stopped teens about 20 times last year.

Tyari Jenkins, a 14-year-old African-American student at Teachers Preparatory High School, said he has been stopped and frisked three times.?

(Photo: Malik Fleming, 14, has been stopped and frisked three times in Brownsville. Ailsa Chang/WNYC)

The first time was as a 12-year-old, when he was barely five feet tall, he said.?He had been walking out of his home to his friend?s house across the street.

?When I looked up, I see the cop.? He was like, ?You,? and I was like, ?Me??? He said, ?Yeah,?? Tyari recalled.? ?He said, ?Empty your book bag,? and I was like, ?Okay,? and I was taking my time.?Then he said, ?You need to hurry up.? And he started emptying my book bag and dropped my stuff on the ground.?

The officers asked for an ID.?Tyari said he left his at home, so the officers hauled him back home across the street and asked his mother to identify him.?After a few minutes, they left.

Tyari said he?s never been arrested for anything.?Neither have any of the other Brownsville kids who shared their stories.?They are now 14 years old, and all of them have been stopped by police between two and seven times.? ??

Emani Orr is an eighth grade student at P.S./I.S. 323, a school that is 99 percent black and Latino and nearby to Teachers Preparatory High School.?

Orr and her twin brother Zeandre were walking to the McDonald?s on Pitkin Avenue in Brownsville around 5 p.m. a few months ago when they were approached by police, she said.

?They was like, ?It?s too late for you all to be outside? but we was just walking,? she said.

Although she didn?t get patted down ? the officers explained it was because she was a girl ? Zeandre did.

?I guess it was just because we was two black kids in the neighborhood at night time walking around,? said Zeandre.

Ashley Fernandez (right), who?s Dominican and also an eighth grader at P.S./I.S. 323, said she started getting stopped by police when she was 12-years old.?

By her 14th birthday, she said she had been stopped by police between seven and eight times.?

Ashley thinks it?s because she dresses like a boy.?Her long hair is usually pulled back in a tight ponytail which she threads through an Oakland Raiders baseball cap.?She wears baggy T-shirts, sneakers and loose jeans.

?I don?t sag though, really, because I?m still a girl,? she said.

She said she usually gets stopped by police when leaving school for the day, and the stops seem to happen when she doesn?t have her backpack on, so she?s gotten used to wearing her school bag all the time.

One day when she was 12, she said police stopped her and a group of friends while they were walking to McDonald?s.

?They asked us where we coming from, and they asked us to see ID. And we said ?We 12, we don?t got ID,?? said Ashley.

She said the officers looked inside each of their book bags and asked if they were in a gang.?Everyone shook their heads.?The police moved on after five minutes.

But sometimes the police don?t move on after a few minutes.?

Anthony Henry, also an eighth grader from P.S./I.S. 323, was walking to school before 8 a.m. last month when a big jeep pulled up alongside him.?Five cops jumped out, he said.?

?And they were all like, ?Put your hands up? and stuff,? said Anthony.??They checked me, checked my book bag.?They threw all my books on the floor.?

The police started questioning him about drugs and gang members.?He said he didn?t know anyone in a gang.?They took him home, and his mom started yelling at the cops, telling them they had the wrong guy.?At that point, Anthony said one officer just patted him on the head, and said, ?My bad.??

By the time his mom drove him back to school, Anthony had already missed first and second period.?

?It made me feel, I dunno, retarded,? said Anthony.??Like a gangbanger.?Because only gangbangers get stopped for nothing, just for walking.?

?White Kids in Manhattan Have No Idea?

The Brownsville students who spoke to WNYC say they were never surprised when they actually got stopped.? Many of them already got that talk ? that talk with a parent about what to do when a police officer rolls up on you.?

Tyari Jenkins says his mom gave him the same advice she followed when she was growing up in Brownsville:

?When the cops come and stop you, just cooperate and do what they say.? Because if you do something bad, or if you get too violent, they can take you to jail.?They not the ones who?s going to get in trouble,? he said.

(Photo: Anthony Henry, 14, said he was stopped and frisked on his way to school at P.S./I.S. 323. When the police let him go, he said he already missed first and second period at school. Ailsa Chang/WNYC)

The police department has long defended stop and frisks as a way to bring down violent crime and get guns off the street. The NYPD did not return request for comment on this story.

Tyari said there are gang members in Brownsville ? lots of them ? his age.? But the police will stop everyone, he says, because to them, he said, everyone seems to look the same.?

?I think that?s discrimination because white kids in Manhattan have no idea cops can frisk you for no reason,? he said, ?like they walk past the cops and actually say, ?Good Morning? to them.?

But maybe some white kids in Manhattan do get it.?

Freshman Colby Goldberg of Stuyvesant High said he knows how different his life is from other 14-year-olds who live just nine miles away in places like Brownsville.

?If I was the same exact personality but born to a different family, with a different skin color, then that would totally change my, I guess, my life,? said Colby.??It?s a sad consequence of the way society is and the way society forces people to be.?

Phillies sending Halladay to doctor on Tuesday

By RICK FREEMAN

updated 11:24 a.m. ET May 28, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Now all the Philadelphia Phillies and their fans can do is wait. For another day, at least.

The Phillies say they will send Roy Halladay to see a doctor on Tuesday, two days after he came out of a start due to a sore right shoulder. On Monday, the team was still determining where and when, exactly, their star right-hander will be examined.

Halladay first started to feel discomfort in Tuesday's start against Washington, but pitched through it. He cut back on throwing between starts, but it didn't help and he left after two innings against St. Louis that included Yadier Molina's grand slam.

Halladay started the season in his usual overpowering way, holding the Pittsburgh Pirates to two hits in eight innings of a 1-0 win. Everything seemed pretty much normal until he blew a 6-0 lead and was pulled after eight earned runs in 5 1-3 innings against Atlanta on May 2.

Best Hierarchical, GTD, Ubiquitous To Do List:MyLifeOrganized on iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry

To Do list when used with a well honed process daily is a very productive tool. And the people behind MyLifeOrganized (MLO) have been creating their task management app since the Windows Mobile days.

Windows Mobile

Back then, we don?t have things like Getting Things Done methodology to guide us, but MLO have the best task management solution in my opinion.

Windows Mobile allow tree style hierarchical views, so they were able to create a task and subtask concept which was rare in that days.

To supplement that, they have a very well thought out hierarchical to do list which you can tag due dates, notes and contexts. You can sync this with your windows mobile app.

Playing catch up

What MLO did not anticipate was how well the iPhone and iPod took off and herald a wave of to do list apps like the ones on my side bar.

A very good app rest too much on its laurels and miss a ton of good revenue.

About a year ago, I visited MLO?s homepage and realize that they were frantically churning out their solution for each smartphone platform. I anticipate that they really hired a lot of developers on different platforms to execute this because unlike the makers of Wunderlist who are coming up with their own ubiquitous app Wunderkit, MLO managed to deploy beta versions at a really break neck speed.

So how is their offering?

iPhone MLO

The iPhone app costs USD $9.99 which is the price for all the premium To Do list apps such as 2Do and ToDo.

The thing everyone likes about MLO is that they contain the most essential widgets for task management:

  1. Task Description, Notes, Due Date, Status
  2. Repeating or Recurring Tasks
  3. Sub-tasking or parent child concept
  4. Tagging

For the iPhone App, they brought over the hierarchical concept. You can create unlimited levels of subtasks.

What you can do on the windows and windows mobile applications you can do it on the iPhone app.

Most of the reviews are from people that have used the windows version of MLO and the reviews are mixed. To most it?s a godsend to be able to carry out the same way of doing things on the iPhone.

For others they cannot understand the complicated interface and they deemed it as complicated and unstable.

iPad MLO

The iPad version costs USD $19.99. That is steep. It essentially is priced in the range of Omnifocus, which is the one David Allen recommends.

It basically does what the iPhone app does but because iPad has a more affordable screen real estate, it makes a splendid project planning tools.

The great thing is it is similar to that of the iPhone app. Unlimited hierachy, repeating, contexts, places and many many different views for people that does things differently

Android MLO

There isn?t a pricing on the Android version. It is Beta currently but soon it will be selling at USD 9.99. That is bloody steep. [Google Play >>]

Although this is a fully featured BETA version of MyLifeOrganized, some features are still in development. You can use the beta version for free until the final product is released. Once the final version has been released, you will have the choice of continuing to use MyLifeOrganized for free in Lite mode, or purchasing a license key to unlock the full feature set. In either case your data will be preserved after the upgrade. Please use our forum for feedback, since we cannot respond on Android Market.

I am an Android smartphone user currently and MLO have been a god send on the Android.

For one, there isn?t a to do list that provides unlimited subtasking like MLO. There are many apps that syncs to Google Tasks but Google Tasks is very limited. For one you cannot create repeatable tasks.

The example above you can see that I have an ?Area of responsibility? in Work, follow by a short project writing a report.

The most useful thing is that I can order the list by cutting tasks and pasting task in the right order.

Kudos to MLO for providing this.

Having start and end dates are what is required for project management. This would filter out tasks not expected to start soon.

You can also change a task into a project and assign multiple contexts, setting subtasks in order.

You can relate contexts with those that belong within another. Take Office Computer. If you tag something as that it will appear if you filter by Office as well.

MLO provides a lot of interesting options. For each tree of tasks if you complete all the tasks you can have MLO create another repeating tree of subtasks.

For projects that you want to reuse, MLO allows you to reset in two ways.

Overall, you would find the settings to be so flexible even if the work flow doesn?t fit you outright, you can tweak it to your liking.

The Android MLO have so many views! You can start drafting by Outline or Projects then filter by which tasks are active at certain places, people or time duration.

And if you think those are the only views that is available to you, check out more.

MLO also offer widgets that you can embed on your home screen

Overall, the people love it.

Blackberry MLO

By now you would know the Blackberry app is more or less similar to the others. The blackberry version costs USD $14.99. Steep.

But I think it is worth it because there isn?t much GTD application that does unlimited subtasking like MLO on blackberry.

MLO Cloud Sync

How does MLO make it ubiquitous? By getting you to subscribe to a cloud sync service.

This would allow you to sync over the air with each device.

The service cost on an average

  • $25.95 for 2 years
  • $14.95 for 1 year
  • $9.95 for 6 months
  • $5.95 for 3 months
  • $2.95 for 30 days

I have not tried this service but if you subscribe for long $1.25 per month doesn?t sound expensive.

I hope that this would allow me to sync an iPad with an Android smartphone.

Conclusion

MLO have the most comprehensive solution. Back a few months I wrote what is the use cases you need for a task management solution.

  1. Task Description, Notes, Due Date, Status
  2. Repeating or Recurring Tasks
  3. Sub-tasking or parent child concept
  4. Tagging
  5. Extensible API
  6. Ubiquitous

MLO provides all except the extensible API. That way you cannot grow it as a platform.

MLO essentially is a closed network and they force you to subscribe to it, somewhat like Microsoft.

What I find intolerable is that every piece of app cost a lot. If they want to sell this platform to users they would have make it cheaper for the users.

Say you need the Windows app and the iPhone app to sync with each other that will set you back $45.95 + $9.99 + $14.95 = $70.89

That is expensive. And if I believe more so then Omnifocus.

I find the solutions very good, but I just cannot except the price.

After decade in storage, Washington letter on religious freedom will go public

After decade in storage, Washington letter on religious freedom will go public
Alex Zuckerman ("CNN," May 23, 2012)

Washington, USA ? After sitting in storage for nearly a decade, George Washington?s signature statement on religious liberty will go on display this summer in the city where freedom of religion was enshrined in the Constitution: Philadelphia.

America?s first president wrote the letter to a Jewish congregation in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1790, assuring American Jews that their freedom of religion would be protected. The document will go on display this summer for the first time since 2002 in an exhibition at Philadelphia?s National Museum of American Jewish History.

For nine years, the letter has been kept out of public view, in storage at a sterile Maryland office park a few hundred feet from FedEx Field, where the Washington Redskins play. CNN took an inside look at the document in September.

But the Morris Morgenstern Foundation, which owns the letter, has agreed to put the historic document on public display, officials at the National Museum of American Jewish History said.

?Our institution as well as others have been trying to have access to (this) for a long time,? said museum director and CEO Ivy Barsky. ?We feel fortunate that the Morgenstern Foundation thought us worthy.?

The loan agreement between the museum and the foundation is unusual. The museum will have the letter for three years but will be allowed to show it for just three months per year. The letter will be kept in a dark storage area for preservation for the other nine months.

The document will be accompanied by an exhibit called ?To Bigotry No Sanction: George Washington and Religious Freedom,? which will run June 29 to September 30. Barsky said the exhibit came together only after the museum was certain it could showcase Washington?s letter.

Before going into storage in 2002, the letter was on display at the Klutznick Museum at B?nai B?rith International Headquarters in Washington. It was on display there for 45 years before the organization downsized, closing its museum. The letter went into storage.

After that, many people did not realize where the letter had gone, according to Jane Eisner, editor of Forward, a Jewish newspaper. Eisner dedicated a series of editorials over the last year to lobbying for public display of the letter. She also sent a reporter, Paul Berger, to research the history of the letter.

?This is one of those rare moments as a journalist where you can see the fruits of your labor,? Eisner said. ?All we had was all Washington had, which was words. We just have our words and arguments that we try to put out in the public sphere as best we could.?

The letter is considered to be Washington?s key public statement on religious freedom. Eisner and Barsky say that the document signaled a welcoming of all people to America in pursuit of freedom.

?May the father of all mercies scatter light, and not darkness, upon our paths,? the letter reads, ?and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in His own due time and way everlastingly happy.?

The letter addressed the congregation?s fears that Jews could face discrimination in the new nation. ?The letter starts off to the Hebrew congregation of Newport, Rhode Island,? said Mordechai Eskovitz, rabbi of the Touro Synagogue in Newport. ?It was meant for the congregation. It is addressed to the congregation.?

The Library of Congress had asked to display the letter during a 2004 exhibit on the 350th anniversary of Jewish life in America. When the loan was not completed, many historians speculated that no one would be able to meet the standards of the Morgenstern Foundation for exhibiting the letter.

?Usually people would die just to be invited to display their property,? said Jonathan Sarna, professor at Brandeis University and a pre-eminent scholar on Jewish-American history. ?If the Library of Congress wanted something of mine, they would have it the next day with insured mail.?

Berger, the Forward reporter, says the letter?s placement at another Jewish museum could mean the Morgenstern family would like to see the letter stay in a Jewish facility. ?Nobody knows why the family chose the museum in Philadelphia over the Library of Congress,? he said.

The Morgenstern Foundation did not respond to requests for comment.

It is unclear where the document will go after its three-year loan at the Museum of American Jewish History.

Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, circa 1923</p><p>Poor Zuckerberg. He?s got all those Facebook shares. And they?re dropping in price. The stock closed a bit over $31Tuesday?and then kept sinking? It was down to $30 in afterhours trading.</p><p>What did you expect? The company has sales of $4 billion. IF?IF?it were able to claw out a 10% profit margin?and IF a fair multiple for its earnings were, say, 10?the company would be worth $4 billion. Not $100 billion. Four billion dollars. And instead of having shares valued at $15 billion, Mr. Zuckerberg would have shares worth about $800 million.</p><p>The Dow itself was flat Tuesday. Not a very good showing after so many down days. We?ll keep our ?Crash Alert? flag up. The bottom could drop out at any time.</p><p>The Facebook IPO looks more and more like the end of an era. The end of the pie-in-the-sky social network era. The end of the post-crisis recovery rally. The end of the public?s residual confidence in Wall Street. The end of America?s youthful energy?its era of growth, innocence and hope for the future.</p><p>Now, growth rates are low; they?ve been falling for the last 30 years. The baby boomers are neither booming nor babies. Stocks are pass??people want bonds now. And 63% of voters think their children will be worse off than they are.</p><p>At least Zuckerberg has it made. He?s got about 500 million shares and options. But every two dollars they fall costs him about $1 billion. So, he?s lost $5 billion since the company went public on Friday.</p><p>Still, we?re not going to feel sorry for him. He?s still got $15 billion or so.</p><p>Not that we care how much money he?s got. He could have twice as much; he?d still be a putz. We saw the movie!</p><p>Seriously, Americans care far too much about money. That?s what people who don?t have it say. They say that too much money is a sign of greed. And that people with too much money can?t relate to everyone else. We lose our sense of community?our public space. People with money live separately from the rest of us. They buy elections and use too much energy?and leave small tips. They?ve got too much power, too much influence, and too much of the pie.</p><p>Paul Krugman, Thomas Friedman and Barack Obama want to solve this problem by taking money away from the people who have it. And making it harder for them to earn more.</p><p>The guys at J.P. Morgan lost a few billion. You?d think the anti-money crowd would be happy about that. Instead, they want to make a federal case out of it. Practically every pundit is calling for more regulation. ?If even good bankers can lose so much,? they say, ?we?ve got to get control of them!?</p><p>The whole idea that they can regulate risk out of the system is loony. It doesn?t work that way. The more they regulate, the more they distort the market, and the more mistakes investors make.</p><p>Investors are buying US treasury bonds, for example, by the boatload. Why? Because the regulators at the Fed have taken the risk out of buying bonds. If interest rates rise, the Fed will buy bonds itself.</p><p>Dear Readers and connoisseurs of regulatory FUBARity will appreciate the flexibility of America?s central bank. Its aim is to drive investors into risky assets?by suppressing yields on ?safe? treasuries. The unintended consequence is to create depression-like yields?and capital gains for bond buyers. Investors flee stocks?and go into the Treasury bonds the Fed was trying to get them out of. Thus does the Fed manage to bend its right leg far enough to kick its own derriere.</p><p>People who don?t like the rich should spend a little time thinking about how the rich got that way. Were they smarter than others? Greedier? Or just luckier?</p><p>In our humble observation, we?d say they were a little of all those things. But most of the big increase in wealth the rich enjoyed has come thanks to those same regulators whom the feds want to sic on them.</p><p>Yes, dear reader, the rich got richer because of the fixers?not because of the rich themselves. In 1971, Richard Nixon changed America?s money. The old money ? backed by gold ? flowed to the hardworking producers. It was saved, invested, and put to work. This new money had different ideas. It ran around in different circles. It preferred a different class of friends ? bankers, money managers, investors, speculators, venture capitalists, derivative mongers, private equity operators?</p><p>You can see this shift illustrated in the difference between Mitt Romney and his father. The ol? man ran an auto company. He made cars. That?s where the money was back then. He made the Rambler. Remember that? We had one. It was cheap. It was ugly. It ran. What more could you ask for?</p><p>But the son never made anything?but money itself. He didn?t run productive companies. Instead, at Bain Capital he was a leading member of the new class of people who fiddled with them.</p><p>By 2007, this class had gotten far too big for its britches. The whole capital structure began to wobble. Left alone, it would have crashed to the ground?bringing rich people down to earth with it.</p><p>Left to its own devices ? without the generous support of the feds ? the Dow might have fallen to 6,000 in 2008?and kept falling. And it probably would have brought down J.P. Morgan?and Goldman Sachs?the Bank of America and most of the rest of Wall Street. Even GM, which by then had become a finance company, would have gone out of business.</p><p>And today?there wouldn?t be nearly as many rich people to complain about. Problem solved.</p><p>Instead, the fixers fixed it so the fixees stayed fixed.</p><p>Hey?here?s another bubble?getting ready to blow up. Bubble bubble student trouble:</p><p>Student Loans With Over $1 Trillion are Likely One of the Next Hindenburg Zeppelin Financial Infernos</p><p>Barry James Dyke, author of The Pirates of Manhattan II: Highway to Serfdom predicts that student loans, in excess of $1 trillion, will likely be one of the country?s next financial infernos.</p><p>Federal student loans interest rates will rise to 6.8% on July 1st 2012 from their current 3.4% base if Congress does not act. Banking lobbies oppose any reduction in interest rates. If Congress does nothing, the average student?s $23 thousand subsidized loan costs will increase an additional $5,000 over a ten year period.</p><p>The author states, ?Student loans are a form of indentured servitude as student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. Student loans do not die with death. Collection agencies can call day and night to collect student loan debts. Garnishment to pay student loan debt is common. Students are not getting enough well-paying jobs to pay back these enormous loans, yet The Department of Education through the Department of Treasury can attach tax refunds to pay off student loans. What is more, our Congress drove the getaway car for academia and the banks in 2005 with the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 ? which turned student loans into non-dischargeable debt.?</p><p>According to the Department of Education, two thirds of students who earn a bachelor degree use some type of loan to finance their education with an average loan of roughly $23 thousand. The New York Times recently reported that as much as 94% of students borrow to get a college degree.</p><p>The taxpayer underwrites roughly $105 billion a year in Title IV student loans a year, with $24 billion going to for profit schools owned by Wall Street asset managers. Student loans guaranteed by the taxpayer are a major source of revenue for the US higher educational system and if default rates accelerate, it could bring about a Greece like debt problem to the nation?s colleges.</p><p>?Excessive borrowing for an education will be a dark cloud hanging over this generation for decades,? claims Dyke. ?Default rates on student loans for traditional undergraduate and graduate rates are currently as high as 15.8%, and as high as 48% for for-profit colleges. The New York Fed reports that nearly one in four student loan holders are falling behind on their student loan payments.</p><p>Regards,</p><p> Bill Bonner<br />?for <i>The Daily Reckoning</i></p> <p>The Christian Science Monitor has assembled a diverse group of the best economy-related bloggers out there.
