Catholics support making church more open to gays

Opinion of Pope Francis is resolutely favorable, while Americans - and especially Catholics - side with making the church more open to gays

Earlier this week, Pope Francis made headlines when he said in an interview, "Who am I to judge a gay person of goodwill who seeks the Lord?". Catholic officials have said the remark does not mark a shift for Catholic doctrine - being homosexual is not a sin but homosexual acts are. But Francis's words have a sparked discussion of a new era of inclusivity?for the church.

New research from YouGov shows that perception of Pope Francis remains resolutely positive, while his remark on homosexuality has been well-received, especially by Catholics.

Overall, 56% of Americans have a favorable view of the Pope. This has risen from 40% when Francis first assumed the papacy in March and remains much higher than his predecessor Benedict XVI, whom 35% of Americans have a favorable opinion of.?Approval of Francis is even higher among Catholics, with 76% having a favorable opinion.

As for whether the Catholic Church should be more inclusive of homosexuals, Americans tend to agree. 39% say the Catholic Church should be more inclusive while 29% say it should not be. Among Catholics support rises, with 46% saying they want to church to be more open to gays and 24% saying the opposite.

While Americans want the Catholic Church to be inclusive, they are still split on the morality of homosexual acts, which the Catholic Church condemns as sinful. 43% say that homosexual acts are sinful while 41% say they are not. Catholics are similarly divided on the matter, with 38% saying homosexual acts are sinful and 39% saying they are not.

The survey also signaled that American - and especially Catholics - want Francis to make changes in the church. Overall, 35% of American adults say they want Francis to make major changes and 22% say they want him to make minor changes. Only 8% say they want no changes at all. Among Catholics, the number rises even higher to 39% wanting major changes and 33% saying they want minor changes.

New surgical tool offers surgeons speedier diagnosis of tissues that are cancerous

Meet the iKnife: It?s a new tool that may help surgeons shorten the operating time for cancer patients. Within three seconds, it can tell whether cut tissue is healthy or cancerous, a new study finds. The same identification takes up to 30 minutes when done by a person, as it is now.

Any diseased cells left behind during cancer surgery can cause a new tumor, allowing the disease to spread. So surgeons face a balancing act. They try to cut out every last bit of diseased tissue, but no more than is absolutely necessary. That can be tricky around the edges of the tumor. That?s where diseased cells join healthy ones.

Surgeons often use electric currents to zap diseased cells, rather than a sharp blade to cut them out. These electric tools are ?as common as scalpels,? Zolt?n Tak?ts told Science News. Tak?ts, a chemist at Imperial College London, led the new study. As it heats tissue, this new type of electric ?knife? releases some smoke. It?s ash from the zapped cells. The iKnife analyzes the smoke to tell if the cells had been healthy or diseased. The approach is similar to diagnosing what type of wood a fire had burned by studying the smoke.

With the iKnife, ?They are basically blowing up tissue, making smoke out of it and then sampling that smoke,? Nicholas Winograd explains. A chemist at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, he did not work on the new study. ?I don?t think it?s at all obvious that this kind of thing would work and I give them a lot of credit for developing it,? he told Science News.

The iKnife ?sniffs? the smoke using mass spectrometry (spek TROM eh tree). It?s a standard tool that chemists use to uncover the ingredients in some unknown sample. Spectrometry can detect what types of material were in the ash. For example: Tak?ts? team found that healthy cells have different proportions and types of fat than cancerous cells. The iKnife might measure fat particles in smoke to identify which cells ? healthy or cancerous ? were burned.

The scientists tested the iKnife on 91 patients with cancer. For each patient, the device delivered a diagnosis that matched that given by a pathologist. This type of doctor is trained in examining tissues for evidence of trauma and disease. Tak?ts? team reported its findings July 17 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The iKnife is off to a promising start. But before it can be released for use in operating rooms throughout the world, scientists must first test the tool repeatedly in human trials. Researchers must confirm that iKnife analyses are as reliable as the ones today performed by pathologists.

U.S. consumer spending, inflation rise in June

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer spending increased and inflation pushed higher in June, which could strengthen expectations that the Federal Reserve will curtail its bond purchases later this year.

The Commerce Department said on Friday consumer spending rose 0.5 percent, lifted by automobile purchases and higher gasoline prices. May's increase was revised down to 0.2 percent from a previously reported 0.3 percent.

June's increase in consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, was in line with economists' expectations.

A price index for consumer spending rose 0.4 percent, the largest gain since February. It had edged up 0.1 percent in May. Over the past 12 months, inflation rose 1.3 percent, still below the Fed's 2 percent target.

The index advanced 1.1 percent in the period through May.

With prices picking up, consumer spending adjusted for inflation nudged up 0.1 percent. The so-called consumer spending, which goes into the calculation of gross domestic product, had increased by the same margin in May.

The consumer spending numbers were included in the second-quarter GDP report on Wednesday, which showed the economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual pace after expanding at a 1.1 percent rate in the first three months of the year.

Spending has been held back by an increase in taxes at the start of the year, but is expected to accelerate in the second half of the year, supported by a steady jobs market and a recovery in housing.

The economy added 162,000 jobs in July, compared to 188,000 in the previous month, the Labor Department said on Friday. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast jobs growth of 184,000 for July.

The rise in inflation in June should provide some comfort to Fed officials who on Wednesday nodded to the potential dangers of inflation running too low, and bring them close to reducing the central bank's $85 billion per month in bond purchases.

Still, inflation remains benign. The price index for consumer spending, excluding food and energy, rose 0.2 percent in June. It was the largest increase since January and followed a 0.1 percent gain in May.

Core prices were up 1.2 percent from a year ago, rising by the same margin for a third consecutive month.

A firming labor market is helping to prop up income, which in June gained 0.3 percent after rising 0.4 percent in May.

But government salaries fell, reflecting furloughs at agencies as part of Washington's belt-tightening.

With spending outpacing income growth, the saving rate - the percentage of disposable income households are socking away - fell to 4.4 percent from 4.6 percent.
