Cirque du Soleil to resume Vegas show after death
LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Cirque du Soleil will resume performances of its "Ka" show in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, 17 days after an acrobat fell about 90 feet to her death in its closing scene, the company announced Sunday.
But the show at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino will resume without the final aerial battle scene that resulted in the June 29 death of Sarah Guillot-Guyard, spokeswoman Renee-Claude Menard said.
The decision to resume the show was made after consultation with the production's artists and staff, she said, and Tuesday night's show will be dedicated to the late Paris-born performer's memory.
The battle scene act will be replaced with a "dressing-ritual" scene that maintains both the story line of the production and its 90-minute length.
Coroner's officials have ruled that the 31-year-old Guillot-Guyard's death by blunt force trauma was an accident. She was still in her harness when she fell.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation that could take six months.
Horrified audience members who witnessed the accident say they initially thought the acrobat's fall was part of the show. They say they realized something had gone wrong when they heard cries of performers.
The show momentarily continued, then stopped. Minutes after the accident, a recorded announcement informed audience members that refunds or vouchers to future shows would be offered, and the crowd was dismissed.
Cirque du Soleil officials say it was the first time a performer has died from an onstage accident in the company's 29-year history.
The mother of two was a French citizen and Las Vegas resident. She had been with the original cast of Ka since 2006, and had been an acrobatic performer for more than 20 years.
Plans call for Ka to resume with a modified schedule with shows starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The regular schedule, also featuring late shows at 9:30 p.m., will resume July 23.

Texas Department of Public Safety responds to Texas-Mexico border incidents
Texas Department of Public Safety officers responded to multiple incidents that took place Thursday on the Texas-Mexico border.
According to preliminary information, the first incident occurred early Thursday afternoon, when DPS said a Texas Rangers' boat responded to a "shots fired" call by the U.S. Border Patrol on the Rio Grande River.
After arriving at the scene, DPS said the Rangers observed that the border patrol agents had taken cover inside their boat while pointing across the river toward individuals on the Mexico side, believed to be responsible for the shots fired.
Rangers then launched tear gas rounds in the direction of the individuals in Mexico, who DPS said vacated the area.
Later in the afternoon in a separate incident, a DPS Tactical Marine Unit team was patrolling the river, when they came upon a raft that was nearing the U.S. shore, and observed multiple subjects aboard.
As the TMU team approached, DPS said the subjects abandoned the raft and swam to Mexico. The TMU team seized the raft, which was on the U.S. side and contained several bundles of marijuana, totaling approximately 1,100 pounds, according to DPS.
Around the same time, at approximately 5 p.m., DPS said the Texas Rangers' boat responded to assist with the marijuana seizure incident.
While en route, the Rangers' boat was fired upon from Mexico. DPS officers aboard the Rangers' boat returned fire, at which time the subjects in Mexico vacated the area.
Officials said the TMU patrol vessel was not present at the time of this particular shooting.
DPS said no injuries were reported in all three incidents. Additionally, no charges have been filed in these cases, as all subjects fled into Mexico.
While these incidents occurred in the South Texas area, authorities said the specific locations will not be released at this time for security purposes.
No additional information is available at this time.

WITH a big chance in front of him, Townsville schoolboy Matt Symes plans to take his starting opportunity with the Northern Fury this evening in both hands.
Fury player/coach Gareth Edds will hand Symes his first start for the senior team against Palm Beach on the Gold Coast as a reward for consistently good efforts in training all year and performances with the Fury's under-18 side.
Symes, 16, came on last week and played the last 20 minutes in the 3-0 win against the Queensland Academy of Sport as a substitute for Burrows, and was called upon to play out from the back and make a save.
Burrows, 18, has been solid between the sticks this year in his 16 games for the Fury, keeping three clean sheets, but Edds said he was going to give his other keepers the chance to play with just six games left in the season.
"Matty's going to play 90 minutes and he's going to have an opportunity to go there and perform and see how he goes," Edds said.
"It's a good chance against a good team. Brad has done terrific in his work and in the last two games kept clean sheets, and I know where Brad's at now but we've got to give opportunities to other players."
Edds said the 'keeper switch had nothing to do with form and that he had plenty of confidence that Symes would be able to do the job against the Gold Coast side.
"In training and in the under-18s he's been terrific and he's been working really hard," Edds said.
"He's done it all season, so players who are putting those efforts in need to be rewarded from time to time. I'm going to reward him with a start and he deserves it."
The Ignatius Park College Year 12 student said he was excited to make his debut and was looking to continue Burrows' good work and claim another clean sheet in hopefully another Fury win.
Symes said he wasn't expecting to come on as a substitute last week, but he relished the chance after Reyze Kelly's goal.
"When it was 2-0, Gareth said that I'd be going on, so I was pretty excited about that and really hoping we'd find that third goal," he said. "I was just focused on going out there and continuing the team and play well, I didn't want to stuff up the 3-0 lead."
While he expects some nerves this afternoon, Symes said he wouldn't let it change the way he played and intended to make the most of the chance.
"(My coach) he told me to go out there and play the way I usually play and he wouldn't be putting me there if he wasn't confident in me," he said.

Pair of Louisiana pitchers named to MaxPreps 2013 Baseball Underclass All-American Team

Ross Massey was one of two Baton Rouge pitchers named to the MaxPreps 2013 Baseball Underclass All-American Team - (Michael DeMocker, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)
Two pitchers from the Baton Rouge area have been named to the MaxPreps 2013 Baseball Underclass All-American Team. Ross Massey of Catholic-Baton Rouge and Manny Miles of University Lab were both recognized in the sophomore class. According to a press release from MaxPreps.com, the pair are just two of several kids from across the country, who were named to the team. The players were chosen by MaxPreps based on their performances during the 2013 season.
Massey, who posted an 8-1 record in 2013 was named to the Baton Rouge All-Area Team, as well as, the Class 5A All-State Team.
Miles went 11-0 with 0.49 ERA in 2013?. He was named the Baton Rouge All-Area Pitcher of the Year. He also made the Louisiana Coaches Association Class 2A All-State Team.
