White House Press Corps Website, Twitter Feed Appears To Have Been Hacked

The White House Press Corps homepage and Twitter feed appears to have been hacked early Friday.

Just before 2 a.m., tweets began flowing into @whpresscorps, complaining about bias in the media. The hackers' beef seemed to be with any news organization that met with Attorney General Eric Holder to discuss how the Justice Department will handle future instances of spying on journalists.

Numerous news outlets refused to attend the meeting with Holder because it was supposed to be "off the record." But five chose to go, and those were the ones lambasted by the unknown hacker(s):

The alleged hacker(s) also made it clear that meeting with Holder had tainted these news organizations' reputations.

The talks followed news of the Obama administration's surveillance of Fox News reporter James Rosen and The Associated Press as part of a government leaks investigation.

Free speech advocates and many in the media took umbrage with these actions, calling them a violation of the First Amendment.

The supposed hacker(s) also seemed to be upset with the administration's handling of last September's attack in Benghazi, Libya, and the IRS' investigation of Tea Party groups.

The White House Press Corps Website and Twitter feed describes the "daily adventures with the White House Press Corps in their own words." When contacted for comment, an autoreply message noted that the site is not associated with the White House Correspondents' Association or its members. "We are an independent source providing information, commentary and analysis on the relationship between the press and the White House."

Putting the brakes on distracted driving

May 29, 2013 ? If you're still using your mobile phone behind the wheel, University of Alberta sociology researcher Abu Nurullah likely has your number.

More specifically, he can tell what statistical category you fall under. Using survey data from mid-2011 -- just months before Alberta's distracted-driving law went into effect -- Nurullah and his colleagues determined several characteristics of people who appear to top the risk scale by using cellphones while driving. The data are useful for police who have to deal with unlawful drive-and-dialers, and for policy-makers seeking to change offenders' habits with ad campaigns.

Nurullah says that although campaigns are an important piece of curbing the behaviour, social pressure from family and friends is also important.

"I think the social influence is the key one. Friends, family, employers -- they should be influencing others to reduce the use of cellphones while driving," he said. "Effective enforcement of the laws should include not only fines for such offences, but also mandatory lessons on the dangers of cellphone use while operating a vehicle."

Driving demographics: Mobile phone use by the numbers

  • Men outnumbered women by almost 10 per cent in phone use while driving. The largest proportion of offenders in both groups fell in the 35-to-44 age category.
  • The majority of mobile users had completed post-secondary education.
  • Among income brackets, the lowest income earners had the lowest level of cellphone use while driving. Rates of use increased with each income category, with those earning over $100,000 per year being the top users.
  • A slight majority of users indicated not being religious.

"These stats can be used to identify the worst offenders for effective enforcement of laws that deter cellphone use while operating a vehicle," said Nurullah. "Since males are more likely to undertake risky driving, it is expected that they would use cellphones more in driving situations."

Attitude adjustment: Social pressure and education critical

The survey also highlighted people's perceptions of the dangers of using a cellphone while driving. The majority of people -- those who used cellphones while driving and those who didn't -- agreed that texting while driving was dangerous and that cellphone use was more likely to result in a collision. But a much smaller minority said they didn't believe cellphone use is as dangerous as impaired driving.

Though the legislation introduced in 2011 may have curbed some use, Nurullah says that a common levelling-off effect means other measures need to be put in place to convince itinerant talkers to hang up and drive.

"There should be an emphasis on educating people about this, changing people's mindsets about doing this, because it is risky," he said. "There is no better alternative than social pressure because it is more effective than legal enforcement. Social media campaigns can also be designed to make people informed about safe driving practices involving the use of cellphones."

Building Your Business Up With Website Marketing - Maynas Eric

Even beginning PC users can create a successful business, and you can succeed too. This article contains useful advice for anyone that wants to create an Internet business.

Get feedback at every stage. This can be crucial to your success because your perception of how your site looks or how your pricing is may not be the perception of others. Valuable feedback can be acquired from potential clients, family members, and others in your industry. Make sure you listen to what is said and make appropriate changes as necessary.

Including a FAQ can be a helpful way to advertise the products you sell or the services you offer. Provide a well-thought-out response for each question, and don?t be afraid to self-sell where appropriate. Write the questions so that your products are the answers without making it look like obvious product placement.

TIP! You need to have a list of customers and addresses. Post notification on your website to collect emails.

It?s a simple equation: more subscribers equals more money. Try split testing to see what sort of web design works the best. Offer one version of your webpage to one group and another version to another group. You can determine which ad is more effective based on subscription rates.

Affiliate marketing is not just exclusively on the internet. Reaching out to bloggers and creating partnerships with mutual benefits is a great way to increase your presence. This adds to a community aspect, and it gets the bloggers more interested in what you are selling and what your brand is all about.

Use your email to your business advantage. Assemble newsletters with entertaining and informative content that will keep your readers engaged. They do not want to be spammed, so make sure your emails provide interesting and relevant content. With an email newsletter, you can stay in touch with past customers, encouraging them to return to your site.

TIP! While a flashy site looks great, try to make sure it is not too distracting. When a person visits your site, you have less than five seconds of time to grab their attention, before they decide to leave and check out another site.

Give your customers a variety of specials to choose from at the check-out page. A customer can add another product for a discount as a thank you. This will make the customer feel appreciated and you can get rid of excess inventory at the same time.

Direct marketing should not be overlooked as a complement to the marketing system for your Internet site. Combine traditional advertising methods with your Web marketing strategy. A lot of the needed information can be acquired by consulting the actual yellow pages or the phone books available online.

Start small when building a site to market a product and gradually grow, adding new features or components slowly. Having a reasonably large site is good, but search engines are more likely to rank your site well if it has around ten or twenty thousand pages.

TIP! Get feedback at every stage. This particular factor can prove really critical to your overall success, since your perspective of your site appearance and pricing structure might not match the perspective of others.

Video marketing is a good way to get your business Internet exposure. Adding a video to your website or blog is the best way to attract and hold a customer?s interest in your product. Use a catchy title and photo to draw in interest and improve sales.

Part of operating a successful online business is ongoing market research on your competitors. Check out the websites of similar businesses and see what it is that they can improve upon. If you have a particular service other websites seem to be lacking in, make sure to highlight these on your site in an effort to beat the competition.

Explore existing research about the psychological and emotional connections that people associate with certain webpages and online marketing communications. A person?s perception of a brand or product can be significantly impacted by psychological aspects of the website, such as the layout, color scheme and theme. Understanding this information can prove very crucial towards maximizing your overall profit.

TIP! Your site?s purpose is identified by the tag above it, so choose it carefully. The main information on any given page directly affects what people assume is on that whole content page.

You need to understand who your target audience is, and what the content is you need to create to draw them to your website. Now that you know who your target audience is, it will be easy to find the information that will encourage them to access your site time and again.

Understandably, getting a hold in any field will take a good amount of time. Use the information you learn here and you will be one step closer to achieving the success you desire.

TIP! An FAQ page is a great way to familiarize people with your products. To address each question or concern, offer thoughtful responses, and also be sure to mention some products that you have for sale as solutions.

High School Student Builds Working Submarine: Possibly Wants to Defect

A high school sub usually means your teacher's sick and you get a free period to screw around. But for one student, its meaning is a little more literal. Eighteen-year-old Justin Beckerman could be considered the reincarnation of Thomas Edison. In his brief life, Justin's created a remote controlled cleaning machine, a helmet home theater, and now a fully functional one-man submarine that can dive as deep as thirty feet. It kind of puts your baking soda volcano to shame.

Starting with a large nine-foot long drain pipe that was capped at both ends using copious amounts of marine-grade waterproof glue, Justin added ballast tanks to allow the sub to dive and rise, drive motors, a communications system including audio and video, and ultra-bright strobe lights that allow him to explore the depths of his local lake.

The submarine took just over six months to design and build, and because Justin has spent his life scavenging electronics and components, he estimates the total cost to be just shy of $1,000. That's money he could have spent on a used car to impress his classmates, but in the long run, having "built a working submarine at age 18" on his resume will certainly impress more influential persons. Russia 8.2 earthquake is big but no deaths

Russia 8.2 earthquake: The USGS says it was even bigger, an 8.3 earthquake, and felt as far away as Moscow. But the Russia earthquake caused no fatalities.

By Steve Gutterman,?Reuters / May 25, 2013

Far eastern Russia experienced a magnitude 8.3 earthquake, according to the USGS. Russian officials reported an 8.2 quake.

A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off Russia's eastern coast on Friday, briefly prompting a tsunami scare but causing no casualties or substantial damage, Russian emergency authorities said.

The USGS says the quake was actually magnitude 8.3.

The epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 385 miles (620 km) in the Sea of Okhotsk, 244 miles (390 km) west of the nearest city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

How big is a magnitude 8.2 quake, compared to say, a magnitude 5.8 quake?

The magnitude scale is really comparing amplitudes of waves on a seismogram, not the strength (energy) of the quakes. So, a magnitude 8.2 is 251 times bigger than a 5.8 quake as measured on seismograms, but the 8.2 quake is about 3,981 times stronger than the 5.8, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS says:

This quake was felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the main city on the Kamchatka peninsula and home to a nuclear submarine base, and on Sakhalin island, where Russia's largest liquefied natural gas project is located.

Regional emergency authorities issued a tsunami warning for Sakhalin and the Kurile islands, advising residents of dangerous areas to seek high ground, but lifted the warning several minutes later.

Residents of northern Japan felt the quake but there was no tsunami warning from Japan's meteorological agency. (Editing by Elizabeth Piper)

Spectacular stellar nursery: ESO's Very Large Telescope celebrates 15 years of success

May 23, 2013 ? With this new view of a spectacular stellar nursery ESO is celebrating 15 years of the Very Large Telescope -- the world's most advanced optical instrument. This picture reveals thick clumps of dust silhouetted against the pink glowing gas cloud known to astronomers as IC 2944. These opaque blobs resemble drops of ink floating in a strawberry cocktail, their whimsical shapes sculpted by powerful radiation coming from the nearby brilliant young stars.

This new picture celebrates an important anniversary for the Very Large Telescope -- it is fifteen years since the first light on the first of its four Unit Telescopes, on 25 May 1998. Since then the four original giant telescopes have been joined by the four small Auxiliary Telescopes that form part of the VLT Interferometer (VLTI). The VLT is one of the most powerful and productive ground-based astronomical facilities in existence. In 2012 more than 600 refereed scientific papers based on data from the VLT and VLTI were published ([ann13009].

Interstellar clouds of dust and gas are the nurseries where new stars are born and grow. The new picture shows one of them, IC 2944, which appears as the softly glowing pink background [1]. This image is the sharpest view of the object ever taken from the ground [2]. The cloud lies about 6500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur). This part of the sky is home to many other similar nebulae that are scrutinised by astronomers to study the mechanisms of star formation.

Emission nebulae like IC 2944 are composed mostly of hydrogen gas that glows in a distinctive shade of red, due to the intense radiation from the many brilliant newborn stars. Clearly revealed against this bright backdrop are mysterious dark clots of opaque dust, cold clouds known as Bok globules. They are named after the Dutch-American astronomer Bart Bok, who first drew attention to them in the 1940s as possible sites of star formation. This particular set is nicknamed the Thackeray Globules [3].

Larger Bok globules in quieter locations often collapse to form new stars but the ones in this picture are under fierce bombardment from the ultraviolet radiation from nearby hot young stars. They are both being eroded away and also fragmenting, rather like lumps of butter dropped into a hot frying pan. It is likely that Thackeray's Globules will be destroyed before they can collapse and form stars.

Bok globules are not easy to study. As they are opaque to visible light it is difficult for astronomers to observe their inner workings, and so other tools are needed to unveil their secrets -- observations in the infrared or in the submillimetre parts of the spectrum, for example, where the dust clouds, only a few degrees over absolute zero, appear bright. Such studies of the Thackeray globules have confirmed that there is no current star formation within them.

Notes

[1] The nebula IC 2944 is associated with the bright star cluster IC 2948 and both of these names are also sometimes associated with the whole region. Many of the bright cluster stars appear in this picture.

[2] The seeing of the blue image in this colour combination was better than 0.5 arcseconds, exceptionally good for a ground-based telescope.

[3] They were discovered from South Africa by the English astronomer A. David Thackeray in 1950.

Trunews' Rick Wiles Calls on Alex Jones to Denounce Armed Open Carry March on Washington

Trunews' Rick Wiles Calls on Alex Jones to Denounce Armed Open Carry March on Washington

Contact: Chase Anderson, Trunews, 772-569-8880, Chase@Trunews.com

VERO BEACH, Fla.,?May 22, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Trunews radio host Rick Wiles today denounced the upcoming Open Carry March on Washington scheduled for July 4, 2013. The march is organized by Adam Kokesh. Participants are urged to carry loaded firearms to Washington and walk across the Memorial Bridge in a show of defiance against demands by the Obama Administration to the Congress to pass stricter gun control laws.

Mr. Wiles is an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment right of American citizens to keep and bear arms. He is a member of the NRA and Gun Owners of America. He personally owns firearms for self defense and recreational target shooting.

"This call for citizens to march with loaded firearms across the Memorial Bridge is highly irresponsible and dangerous," said Wiles. "No responsible citizen should participate in an event that has a high risk of ending in a violent shootout with federal law enforcement officers. This proposed march borders on being an incitement to instigate an armed mob."

Mr. Wiles also strongly criticized radio host Alex Jones for giving Adam Kokesh credibility and publicity by interviewing him on his daily radio program to promote the march. "Nobody would know about this insane idea of marching with loaded firearms had Alex Jones not talked about it on his radio program," said Wiles. He said Mr. Jones is walking a fine line by not officially endorsing the armed march, but giving the event publicity on his show, and by telling his radio listeners who attend the march to take lots of photographs of the police.

"I call upon Alex Jones to publicly denounce Adam Kokesh's call for citizens to carry loaded firearms into Washington D.C. in July," said Wiles. "Alex Jones must unequivocally declare on his radio program that he does not support the armed march, nor does he recommend that any of his listeners attend the armed march," said Mr. Wiles. "Furthermore, he should cease glorifying Mr. Kodesh as an oppressed political prisoner which is only further inflaming people to support this crazy idea."

The Trunews host has warned since 2008 that he fears Barack Obama will divide the American people to the point of civil war. "This country has not been so divided since the late 1850s," said Wiles. "We don't need hotheaded provocateurs aggravating the situation even worse than it already is today. What America needs right now are calm statesmen."

He is deeply concerned that some patriotic Americans are so enraged by the federal government's attack on our Constitutional liberties that they may be persuaded to carry out acts of violence.

"Patriots should not allow themselves to be duped by Spartacus-wannabes," said the Trunews host.

Mr. Wiles has been a very vocal opponent of Barack Obama's socialist revolution. He strongly believes American Christians will be persecuted in the years ahead. "The days of cheap grace Christianity are coming to an end in America. If you truly follow Jesus Christ, you will be persecuted in America. It is very clear where this country is going," said Wiles.

The Trunews radio host said, "American Christians must oppose tyranny with peaceful, nonviolent resistance. The regime would love to have an opportunity to start persecuting Christians. What the regime can't cope with is millions of Christians peacefully and nonviolently resisting their agenda."

Mr. Wiles said, "I'm willing to die, but it will be for the cause of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ! I'm willing to go to prison, but the crime will be quoting the Word of God in public. I'm not going to prison or to the grave because I foolishly listened to Alex Jones' inflammatory rhetoric or marched with a provocateur such as Adam Kokesh."

As a Christian pastor, Wiles said his responsibility is to spiritually prepare souls for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ?-- not an armed political revolution. Wiles said, "The Apostles did not revolt against the Roman Empire. They preached the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ. Eventually, the Roman Empire fell under its own weight of sin, decadence, lavish lifestyles of the rich, deficit spending by the government to conquer and subjugate other nations, and the rapid onset of extreme climate changes. Although the Roman Empire fell, the Church of Jesus Christ stood. It is still standing today. If the people of America do not repent of their sins, the American Empire will fall too. The Church, however, will be standing long after America is in the dustbin of human history. My allegiance is to King Jesus, not Barabbas."

Trunews is the media ministry of Flowing Streams Church in Vero Beach, Florida. Rick Wiles started his weekday radio program in 1999. He is a former national marketing manager for CBN, and former marketing director for TBN.

4 Americans killed since 2009 in US drone strikes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration acknowledged for the first time Wednesday that four American citizens have been killed in drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen since 2009. The disclosure to Congress comes on the eve of a major national security speech by President Barack Obama in which he plans to pledge more transparency to Congress in his counterterrorism policy.

It was already known that three Americans had been killed in U.S. drones strikes in counterterrorism operations overseas, but Attorney General Eric Holder disclosed details that had remained secret and also that a fourth American had been killed.

In a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, Holder said that the government targeted and killed U.S. citizen Anwar al-Awlaki and that the U.S. "is aware" of the killing of three others who were not targets of counterterror operations.

Al-Awlaki, a radical Muslim cleric, was killed in a drone strike in September 2011 in Yemen. The other two known cases are Samir Khan, who was killed in the same drone strike as al-Awlaki and al-Awlaki's 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, a Denver native, who also was killed in Yemen.

The newly revealed case is that of Jude Kenan Mohammed, one of eight men indicted by federal authorities in 2009, accused of being part of a plot to attack the U.S. Marine Corps base at Quantico, Va. Before he could be arrested, Mohammad fled the country to join jihadi fighters in the tribal areas of Pakistan, where he was among those killed by a U.S. drone.

"Since entering office, the president has made clear his commitment to providing Congress and the American people with as much information as possible about our sensitive counterterrorism operations," Holder said in his letter to Leahy, D-Vt. "To this end, the president has directed me to disclose certain information that until now has been properly classified."

"The administration is determined to continue these extensive outreach efforts to communicate with the American people," Holder wrote.

A move to gradually shift responsibility for the bulk of U.S. drone strikes from the CIA to the military has already begun. And, according to an administration official speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly, the move would largely divide the strikes on a geographical basis, with the CIA continuing to conduct operations in Pakistan, while the military takes on the operations in other parts of the world.

The White House said Obama's national security speech Thursday coincides with the signing of new "presidential policy guidance" on when the U.S. can use drone strikes, though it was unclear what that guidance entailed and whether Obama would outline its specifics in his remarks.

Obama "believes that we need to be as transparent about a matter like this as we can, understanding that there are national security implications to this issue and to the broader issues involved in counterterrorism policy," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Wednesday.

"He thinks (this) is an absolutely valid and legitimate and important area of discussion and debate and conversation, and that it is his belief that there need to be structures in place that remain in place for successive administrations," Carney said. "So that in the carrying out of counterterrorism policy, procedures are followed that allow it to be conducted in a way that ensures that we're keeping with our traditions and our laws."

Obama's speech Thursday at the National Defense University is expected to reaffirm his national security priorities ? from homegrown terrorists to killer drones to the enemy combatants imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay ? but make no new sweeping policy pronouncements. The White House has offered few specifics on what the president will say to address long-standing questions that have dogged his administration for years and, critics say, given foreign allies mixed signals about U.S. intentions in some of the world's most volatile areas.

Obama will try to refocus an increasingly apathetic and controversy-weary U.S. public on security issues. His message will also be carefully analyzed by an international audience that has had to adapt to what counterterror expert Peter Singer described as the administration's "disjointed" and often "shortsighted" security policies.

Obama is also expected to say the U.S. will make a renewed effort to transfer detainees out of the Navy-run detention center for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to other countries. Obama recently restated his desire to close Guantanamo, a pledge he made shortly after his inauguration in January 2009.

That effort, however, has been stymied because many countries don't want the detainees or are unwilling or unable to guarantee that once transferred detainees who may continue to be a threat will not be released.

There are currently about 166 prisoners at Guantanamo, and 86 have been approved for transfer as long as security restrictions are met.

Obama is also expected to make the case that the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan has decimated al-Qaida's core, even as new threats emerge elsewhere.

In his letter, the attorney general said the decision to target Anwar al-Awlaki was subjected to extensive policy review at the highest levels of the government. Senior U.S. officials briefed the appropriate committees of Congress on the possibility of using lethal force against Anwar al-Awlaki.

The administration informed the relevant congressional oversight committees that it had approved the use of lethal forces against Anwar al-Awlaki in February 2010, well over a year before the operation, Holder said.

Officials suggest that the CIA strikes into Pakistan have been successful, and point to the agency's ability to gather intelligence there. So, there is less of an inclination to change that now.

In other countries, such as Yemen, Somalia or portions of North Africa, the Defense Department will handle the drone strikes as regular military operations.

In March, the Senate confirmed John Brennan to be CIA director after the Obama administration agreed to demands from Republicans and stated explicitly there are limits on the president's power to use drones against U.S. terror suspects on American soil.

Laura Murphy, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Washington legislative office, said the administration should "produce the legal rationale that allows him to unilaterally decide when drones can be used ... and we would like him to clarify why he feels he has the authority to use drones outside of the battlefield and how he's going to constrain that authority."

Frank Cilluffo, White House domestic security adviser to President George W. Bush, said Wednesday that the fact that the U.S. targeted al-Awlaki and killed three other U.S. citizens in drone strikes should have been part of the public discourse all along.

He said there had been a lingering narrative that Awlaki was an inspirational leader, while in reality he had a key role in multiple operations targeting Americans. "The fact that they are making this public provides justification for the actions they took," said Cilluffo, now director of a homeland security studies program at George Washington University.

Single-cell transfection tool enables added control for biological studies

May 21, 2013 ? Northwestern University researchers have developed a new method for delivering molecules into single, targeted cells through temporary holes in the cell surface. The technique could find applications in drug delivery, cell therapy, and related biological fields.

Bulk electroporation -- a technique used to deliver molecules into cells through reversible nanopores in the cell membrane that are caused by exposing them to electric pulses -- is an increasingly popular method of cell transfection. (Cell transfection is the introduction of molecules, such as nucleic acids or proteins, into a cell to change its properties.)

However, because bulk electroporation applies electric pulses to a bulk cell solution, it results in heterogeneous cell populations and often low cell viability. To solve these problems, Northwestern University researchers have developed a novel tool for single-cell transfection.

The new method, called nanofountain probe electroporation (NFP-E), allows researchers to deliver molecules into targeted cells through temporary nanopores in the cell membrane created by a localized electric field applied to a small portion of the cell. The method enables researchers to control dosage by varying the duration of the electric pulses, which provides unprecedented control of cell transfection.

"This is really exciting," said Horacio Espinosa, James and Nancy Farley Professor of Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and one of the paper's authors. "The ability to precisely deliver molecules into single cells is needed for biotechnology researchers to advance the state-of-the-art in therapeutics, diagnostics, and drug delivery toward the promise of personalized medicine."

A paper describing the research, "Nanofountain Probe Electroporation (NFP-E) of Single Cells," was published May 7 in the journal Nano Letters.

NFP-E is based on nanofountain probe (NFP) technology developed in Espinosa's lab. The NFP-E chip consists of an array of microfabricated cantilever probes with integrated microfluidic channels. The probe has previously been used for high-speed nanopatterning of proteins and nanoparticles for drug delivery studies.

The new single-cell transfection application couples the probe with an electrode and fluid control system that can be easily connected to a micromanipulator or atomic force microscope for position control. This integrated system allows the entire transfection process and post-transfection cell response to be monitored by an optical microscope.

The NFP-E system is being developed for commercialization by iNfinitesimal LLC, a Northwestern spin-off company founded by Espinosa, and is expected to be available in late 2013.

The technique is proving to be extremely robust and multi-functional. Researchers have used the NFP-E chip to transfect HeLa cells with polysaccharides, proteins, DNA hairpins, and plasmid DNA with single-cell selectivity, high transfection efficiency (up to 95%), qualitative dosage control, and very high viability (up to 92%).

In addition to Espinosa, authors of the research paper include Wonmo Kang, Fazel Yavari, Majid Minary-Jolandan, Juan P. Giraldo-Vela, Asmahan Safi, Rebecca McNaughton, and Victor Parpoil. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Jodi Arias asks jury to spare her death penalty

By Tim Gaynor

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Convicted killer Jodi Arias pleaded with an Arizona jury on Tuesday to spare her the death penalty for the sake of her family and sentence her instead to life in prison for killing her ex-boyfriend.

Arias, 32, was found guilty earlier this month in the murder of Travis Alexander, whose body was found slumped in the shower of his Phoenix-area home in June 2008. He had been stabbed 27 times, had his throat slashed and been shot in the face.

The murder trial, which featured graphic testimony and photographs, became a sensation on U.S. cable television with its story of an attractive, intelligent and soft-spoken young woman charged with an unthinkable crime.

The former waitress from California had previously said publicly that she preferred execution to life in prison, but reversed herself on Tuesday, citing concern for her family, in a final act in a marathon court drama that began in January.

"As I stand here now, I can't in good conscience ask you to sentence me to death because of them," she said, gesturing to her father and other family members in court.

"I made many public statements that I would prefer the death penalty to life in prison. Each time I said that, though I meant it, I lost perspective. Until very recently I could not have imagined standing before you all and asking you to give me life ... I thought I would rather die," she said.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens asked the jury on Tuesday afternoon to begin deliberations on a sentence for Arias following closing arguments in the penalty phase of her trial. The jury adjourned for the day without reaching a verdict and will resume deliberations on Wednesday.

If the jury is unable to reach a unanimous decision, a new jury would be impaneled to determine whether the death penalty should be imposed.

In an interview from jail late on Tuesday, Arias told the Arizona Republic newspaper she was not going to "think too much" about the looming verdict, but would just "take what's coming to me."

Should the jury give her a death sentence, she said she would wait for the mandatory appeals process "just taking it day by day." If she gets life in prison, she would "make the most of it" and do what do she can do "to help other people there."

During her trial, Arias admitted killing Alexander but said she had acted in self-defense after he attacked her. She also characterized her relationship with Alexander as physically and emotionally abusive.

"To this day, I can hardly believe I was capable of such violence, but I know that I was, and for that I'm going to be sorry for the rest of my life ... I was horrified by what I had done, and I am horrified still," Arias said.

During Tuesday's court appearance, she told jurors she could lead a productive life in prison, and that there were many things she could do to "effect positive change" and contribute to society.

She mentioned that already, from behind bars, she had donated her long hair to a charity that provides wigs to children, including cancer patients, suffering from hair loss.

"If I'm allowed to live in prison, I will continue to donate to that organization for the rest of my life," she said, adding that she would also like to contribute to campaigns for literacy and to curb domestic violence.

'SO MUCH PAIN'

In closing arguments, defense attorney Jennifer Willmott walked jurors through eight mitigating factors - among them that Arias had suffered abuse, had no criminal history and was 27 at the time of the murder - and urged them to show mercy.

"Jodi took Travis away ... but two wrongs do not make a right. Jodi can still contribute to this world," Willmott told jurors, as Arias sat calmly by her side.

"We are asking you to find that Jodi's life is worth saving .. Despite her very worst deed, you can still show mercy and find that she still has value in her life and sentence her to a term of life in prison," she said.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez countered that there were no documented reports to corroborate Arias' claims of abuse and urged the jury to return a death sentence.

Tuesday's final proceedings came a day after Judge Stephens denied a defense request for a penalty phase mistrial as well as a subsequent request by defense lawyers to withdraw from the case. The judge also denied a motion for a stay to give the defense time to appeal her decisions to the state Supreme Court.

Arias has told the court she had shot Alexander with his own pistol after he attacked her because she had dropped his camera while photographing him in the shower. She said she did not remember stabbing him.

Prosecutors said Arias had repeatedly stabbed Alexander for two minutes as he tried to escape and that she then followed him down a hallway and slashed his throat.

Alexander, a 30-year-old businessman and motivational speaker with whom Arias said she was having an on-again, off-again affair, knew he was going to die and was unable to resist his attacker at that point, Martinez said.

Jurors heard testimony last week from Alexander's younger brother Steven, who said the killing had invaded his dreams and that since the murder he had been hospitalized several times for ulcers. He said he never wanted to see Arias again.

Alexander's younger sister Samantha said thoughts of "the pain, agony, the screams and the fear" of her brother's last moments were stuck in her mind.

On Tuesday, Arias acknowledged the siblings' distress and said she "never meant to cause them so much pain."

"It is my hope that with the verdict you have rendered thus far they will finally gain a sense of closure. Steven said he doesn't want to look at his brother's murderer anymore. If I get life, he won't have to," Arias said.

'Daily Show' creator 'sorry' for tornado joke

Lizz Winstead.

In a tweet, now deleted but preserved via screengrabs and retweets, "The Daily Show" co-creator Lizz Winstead joked about the deadly tornado that struck Oklahoma Monday afternoon, putting a political spin on the natural disaster.

"This tornado is in Oklahoma so clearly it has been ordered to only target conservatives," she wrote.

In a later post to her over-75,000 Twitter followers, Winstead expressed regret over the jab and claimed she made her original comment before the extent of the devastation in Oklahoma was known.

She added in another tweet that she should have known better, that it was a "bad joke. Bad Timing. Just bad."

By Monday evening, when a Twitter follower suggested that the topic of the original tweet wasn't worth all the criticism and scrutiny, Winstead insisted that it was.

"No, it's worth giving me sh--," she wrote. "I was an idiot."

But that follower wasn't the only one who felt the matter should just be dropped. Winstead found an unexpected defender in conservative commentator Glenn Beck.

As it turned out, the tweet that caused all of the the backlash wasn't Winstead's only tornado-related joke -- there was another one she didn't bother to remove.

All of Winstead's most recent tweets and retweets have been controversy-free, focusing on charitable aid for Oklahoma rather than attempts at related humor.

Tunisian feminist arrested for alleged provocation

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? A Tunisian feminist who scandalized her country by posting topless photos of herself online has been arrested after allegedly sneaking into Tunisia's holiest city disguised in a veil, then trying to get undressed during a protest.

On Sunday, Amina Tyler ? a 19-year-old member of the Ukrainian feminist group FEMEN, which uses nudity in its protests ? passed through heavy security and checkpoints to enter the city of Kairouan, where police were preventing hardline conservative Islamists from holding an annual conference.

There she unveiled her bleach blonde hair and cutoff jeans, scrawled "FEMEN" on the wall of a cemetery near the city's main mosque, and attempted to take off her clothes, her lawyer Radhia Nasraoui quoted police as saying.

The protest enraged local residents who converged on her, and police took her into custody.

In a video of the incident shown on the Tunisian news website Nawaat, people yell "get out" at her as police usher her into a waiting van.

"She is dishonoring us. We will protect our town, but a dirty girl like her shouldn't come among us," one resident screams at the camera.

"We are all Muslims," Tyler says to one man, who replies: "You are no Muslim. Don't come to Kairouan."

The Interior Ministry said Monday she may be charged with conducting "provocative acts" when she appears in court on Tuesday.

"It is an act of provocation and it is against the morals and traditions of Tunisian society, which is a Muslim society," Interior Ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Aroui told journalists, without elaborating on what those acts were.

Her mother, Wafa, told The Associated Press her daughter needed help and was being treated by a psychiatrist.

"She suffers from psychological problems," she said on the phone, tearfully. "I am very worried for my daughter. I'm afraid she will be condemned by the court."

Tunisia is the birthplace of the pro-democracy uprisings known as the Arab Spring. Its transition to democracy and how it deals with the questions of Islam, politics and social movements such as feminism are being closely watched around the region.

Tyler has become the latest episode in the battle over the country's identity after the overthrow of a suffocating dictatorship in January 2011 opened the way for competing religious and secular groups.

By choosing Kairouan, Tunisia's main religious site, Tyler stepped into an extremely sensitive situation as the government was moving to confront the rising power of ultraconservative groups.

Ansar al-Shariah, a group whose members have been implicated in violent attacks on art galleries and cinemas, as well as the U.S. embassy, had announced it would hold their annual conference in Kairouan but refused to apply for permission.

The government, which is run by moderate Islamists and had been long accused by the opposition of coddling the extremists, announced that the conference was banned and backed up their decision with 11,000 police and soldiers to stop the conservatives, known as salafis, from gathering in the city.

Shortly before Tyler attempted her protest, there were clashes between police and salafis in the center of Kairouan that had to be dispersed with tear gas.

In Tunis, hundreds of salafis also clashed with police, leaving one protester dead.

Authorities said 274 people were arrested for their involvement in the violence in both cities.

The government's conflict with the salafis also comes as the army has been hunting al-Qaida linked militants in the mountainous Jebel Chambi region near the Algerian border for the last month.

So far 40 people have been arrested in sweeps through the area, said Aroui, the ministry spokesman.

It's Official: Yahoo Is Buying Tumblr, Promises "Not to Screw It Up"

After rumors spread during the weekend, it's now official: Yahoo is buying Tumblr. Yahoo has announced the takeover, aptly enough, on Tumblr, explaining that it "promises not to screw it up." That's a reference, obviously, to the complete mess it's made of pretty much every other company it's ever bought. In that Tumblr post Marissa Mayer explains:

Tumblr is incredibly special and has a great thing going. We will operate Tumblr independently. David Karp will remain CEO. The product roadmap, their team, their wit and irreverence will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve.

It is at least reassuring to hear that Mayer mindful of the fact that Tumblr is already a Good Thing that doesn't need interfering with too much. More comforting for the legions of Tumblr users will be David Karp's own announcement, in which he reassures everyone that the site "isn't turning purple." He continues:

Our headquarters isn?t moving. Our team isn?t changing. Our roadmap isn?t changing. And our mission ? to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve ? certainly isn?t changing.

So what can we expect from the takeover? Well, both parties seem fairly certain that it'll be more of the same, only better. In Karp's words, "simply, Tumblr gets better faster." Mayer is a little more wordy and corporate:

"Tumblr can deploy Yahoo!?s personalization technology and search infrastructure to help its users discover creators, bloggers, and content they?ll love... The two companies will also work together to create advertising opportunities that are seamless and enhance user experience."

Blah, blah, blah. We can, of course, also expect David Karp to become filthy, filthy rich. But that aside, we'll learn more in an announcement call at 9am EST. Check back then for more details.
