Bollywood star Khan caught in India-Pakistan spat

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been caught in a verbal slugfest between India and Pakistan after he wrote a magazine article that led to heated exchanges between the rival nations.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik suggested that New Delhi beef up the actor's security after Khan wrote an account of how it felt to be a Muslim in India.

New Delhi reacted sharply to Malik's comments with Indian politicians and officials asking him to concentrate on looking after the security of Pakistani citizens.

Khan responded to the exchange late Tuesday by saying he was extremely safe and happy in India.

Khan is popularly known as 'King Khan' in the Indian film industry. He has acted in around 75 Hindi feature films, including many box-office hits.

Biologistics: How fast do chemical trains move in living cells?

Jan. 31, 2013 ? The rate of chemical processes in cells is dictated by the speed of movement (diffusion) of molecules needed for a given reaction. Using a versatile method developed at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, researchers were able to predict for the first time the diffusion coefficients of all proteins in Escherichia coli. The achievement is important not only for biologists and chemists, but also for... transport companies.

Understanding of chemical foundations of life requires knowledge about the rate of chemical reactions in cells. The rates of these reactions depend on how fast the molecules taking part in reactions move (diffuse) in the cytoplasm. Prof. Robert Ho?yst's research team from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (IPC PAS) managed to determine -- for the first time -- the diffusion coefficients for virtually all the proteins occurring in Escherichia coli. The method developed by the researchers can also be used for other cells.

The movements of molecules in cells resemble a bit what's going on in railway stations. But the differences are obvious at first glance. "Regular trains leave stations at fixed times, whereas in cells transport processes take place virtually all the time. That's why it doesn't make sense to ask what time does the train with specific molecules leave the station. But it definitely makes sense to ask how fast the train with specific molecules is moving!," explains Prof. Robert Ho?yst (IPC PAS).

Transport efficiency of chemical compounds in cells became inspiring for many transport companies. There's talk of biologistics as modelling vehicle or rail transport by looking up to what's going on inside the cells. Prof. Ho?yst, however, has no illusions about that: "Everyone is delighted, for in cells the transport is so wonderfully resistant to perturbations. They forget, however, that the transport results from random fluctuations, in addition occurring in a small volume, where viscosity depends not only on the medium, but also on the size of the viscosity probe! I wish good luck all those who want to transfer processes occurring in physically so different environment to our roads. Biologistics works excellent, but inside cells only!."

Supported by grants from the National Science Center and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as well as by programs from the Foundation for Polish Science, the research published in the "Bioinformatics" journal focused on the rate of diffusion of protein molecules in the Escherichia coli cytoplasm.

"The viscosity inside mammalian cells is relatively low, only 60 times higher than that of water. But bacteria are considerably smaller, everything is more crowded. The macroscopic viscosity there is up to 26,000 times higher than that of water. This is really dramatic difference!," concludes Dr Tomasz Kalwarczyk (IPC PAS).

Earlier research of Prof. Ho?yst's team allowed for concluding that viscosity experienced by molecules is not only medium, i.e., solvent dependent, but also depends on the size and shape of molecules. Therefore, in the same medium, molecules differing in shape and size can experience very low viscosity (nanoviscosity) or macroscopic viscosity that is up to several thousand times higher. The previous methods for predicting diffusion coefficients in cytoplasm have not accounted for the effect.

Experimental determination of the diffusion rates of chemical compounds in bacterial cells is both time consuming and difficult. As a result, diffusion coefficients have been measured only for a very limited number of compounds in only some bacterial cells. That's why the researchers from the IPC PAS developed a method for predicting diffusion coefficients for various compounds and media. For that purpose they used their own formulae, accounting for nanoviscosity and macroscopic viscosity, and a few dozens of diffusion coefficients of macromolecules in Escherichia coli taken from the literature. This was a basis for construction of a scale-dependent viscosity reference curve that could be used to determine diffusion coefficients of remaining compounds.

The database constructed at the IPC PAS contains diffusion coefficients for complete proteome of Escherichia coli. It includes over 6000 macromolecules, with about 4300 gene-expressed amino acid chains and their various, often multiple combinations (polymers), created both by the same chains (homomers), and by different amino acids (heteromers).

"Because of easy access to the literature data, we created a database only for molecules occurring in Escherichia coli. Our method could be, however, adapted for virtually any cell and every molecule, for instance for determining diffusion coefficients of sugars in mammalian cells," stresses Dr Marcin Tabaka (IPC PAS).

GOP Badly Losing 'Culture Wars'

Quote:

everyone has their own issue they hold as important, weed, wages, guns.

I was just chosing one I thought was important to you, I'm not trying to pigeon hole you. So lets just say it's wages, and that's what is most important to you.
Obviously the person that caters to the same issues that are important to you are going to be the ones you side with.

That said, It doesn't mean that that group isn't going to try and restrict other freedoms that are less important to you but very important to someone else.

Both groups are equally guilty of trying to over reach the boundaries of controling our personal lives, it's just a matter of which issues you stand on.

Both equally guilty and both equally hypoctitical.

Saying one is any worse than the other is purely speculative and based on matters of personal perception .

why are wages more important than the second amendment, or vice versa?
personal perception .
They are both important, but one side is going to emphasize one over the other, whether it's a for or against.

I see what you are saying and believe it.

Both sides suck ass but what are we to do?
Thing is no one is going to take guns from people while there s an ongoing war on unions every second of the day.
Even Biden said, and I agree with it, that a shotgun can protect your house and family and no one is trying to take anyone's shotguns away.

But that's the thing.
Combined with all the rest of the stupidity republicans are the worst of the two evils. Look at how our republicans are acting with Obama. It's like they're playing payback for all the crap Bush took while in office. I thought they would be above that but they've gone beyond the bashing Bush took.

And then it's not about any one or two issues with me but a combined fuck pit of hypocrisy that blows my mind.
For 8 years I watch republicans complain about liberals giving Bush shit, all the while sayin the Office of the President should be respect regardless. Yeah, now it's all of a sudden patriotic to dissent.

Really though, republicans love guns and have this unnatural desire to kill people. Going to the range, blowing shit up preparing for the momentous occasion when they can finally blow someone's face off.
Add to that the pure hatred for anyone that is down on their luck, laid off, collecting unemployment or having to get food stamps because their jobs got sent to China.
Republican love that shit too. They sit there and complain that auto workers are overpaid and that their jobs should be shipped offshore just out of pure spite and hatred for an American that would take the best possible opportunity to raise a family.
Combined, all the issues republicans are behind will destroy America and American families.

And then again, look at all the shit get for trying to better myself, all from right wingers while leftys actually encourage me along.

It blows my fucking mind but I'll be laughing my ass off when Hillary becomes President in 2016. People are sick of republicans, sick of the constant attack on other people's way of life and the way republicans are tolerant of no one or nothing that is out of line with their way of thinking.

GOP will die and I will dance on their grave while pissing all over it.

Clinton says she doesn't see 'getting back into politics'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday cast doubt on speculation she might run for the White House in 2016.

In an interview taped for National Public Radio, Clinton was asked what questions she needs to answer for herself as she decides whether to run for president.

"I'm not even posing those questions. I am really looking forward to stepping off the fast track that I've been on. I've been out of politics as Secretary of State. I don't see myself getting back into politics," she said, according to an excerpt of the interview.

Whether this is her last word on the subject is unknown. She will face strong pressure from Democrats to join the field of contenders. Clinton will step down this week, following Senate confirmation Tuesday of Massachusetts Democratic Senator John Kerry as her successor.

Those close to Clinton are eager for her to announce a 2016 run, so much so that a group has already formed a new super PAC and registered with the Federal Election Commission on Friday, called "Ready for Hillary."

In 2008, she lost to President Barack Obama in a bitter Democratic primary campaign to be the party nominee for the White House.

Although Clinton, 65, did not categorically rule out another presidential run, in a separate NBC interview she said that she was healthy enough to wage a campaign.

"I have no doubt that I am healthy enough and my stamina is great enough and I'll be fully recovered to do whatever I choose to do," Clinton told "Andrea Mitchell Reports" in an interview that aired on Tuesday.

Clinton was hospitalized in December after doctors found a blood clot stemming from a concussion she suffered previously.

She intends to do more public speaking and writing, and work alongside her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and daughter Chelsea on "mutual foundation interests," she said in the NPR interview.

"I want to be involved in philanthropy, advocacy, working on issues - like women and girls - that I care deeply about," Clinton said.

Home prices gain for 10th month in row

4 hrs.

U.S. single-family home prices rose in November, building on a string of gains that points to a housing market that is on the mend, data from a closely watched survey showed on Tuesday.?

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.6 percent in November on a seasonally adjusted basis, in line with economists' forecasts.?

Prices on a non-adjusted basis slipped 0.1 percent. The non-adjusted numbers showed prices fell in about half of the cities covered by the survey, with the winter months typically a weak period for housing, the survey said.?

"Housing is clearly recovering", David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indexes, said in a statement.?

Prices in the 20 cities rose 5.5 percent year over year.?

It was the 10th month in a row that prices have increased, the longest string of gains since before the market started to turn down in 2006.?

The housing market became a bright spot for the economy last year as prices rose and inventory tightened. The sector is expected to contribute to economic growth in 2013.?

5 Ways Real Estate Professionals Can Use the New Video App: Vine

The social networks are all aflutter this week with news of the latest video app ? Vine. Twitter announced on it?s blog:

Today, we?re introducing?Vine: a mobile service that lets you capture and share short looping videos. Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (6 seconds or less) inspires creativity. Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create.

Much like Instagram is now on Facebook?s team, Twitter was surely feeling under the gun to create it?s own photos and/or video sharing app, and Vine has a lot of potential.

If you haven?t seen it yet, you can download it for the iPhone or iPad here. The beauty of this app is the:

  • Simplicity
  • Ease of use
  • Ability to capture multiple shots (in just 6 seconds)

For real estate pros, there are certainly dozens, if not hundreds of video apps available, but there are some great opportunities to use Vine as an agent or a broker. First and foremost, I do not think Vine will replace any professional video. But, I do think where Vine has an extraordinary opportunity is the opportunity to create quick, bite-sized content on the fly ? as a part of your overall content strategy.

?

Here are five quick ideas:

  1. Celebrating moments. I could see a fun Vine made up of a shot of the happy homeowner at the title office, signing the papers, holding up the set of keys, shot of the kids, shot of the SOLD sign rider being held up. One of the best parts of real estate is the moment when you just made your client?s dreams come true!
  2. Introducing a feature of a home. Vine is not a good app for a home tour ? but I think it would be awesome to give a glimpse; a glimpse of an amazing backyard or kitchen ? highlighting 4 or 5 different angles.
  3. Showcasing your team at a sales meeting. How about a few quick shots of a few agents milling around, smiling, hanging out, on the phone or checking their messages? It?s an easy way to get the message across that you have a fun team.
  4. What you are working on.?How do you tell people who you are without telling them what you do? Show them! Working on 3 deals at the same time? Do a quick Vine of your computer, your iPad, the app you use for your contracts ? show how you can work quickly and multi-task using technology.
  5. Educational events. Every time you go to an educational event; whether it is your local association or Inman Connect ? take the opportunity to showcase the fact that you are investing in yourself and your business. Events provide an easy opportunity to create quick content. Take a vine of a speaker on stage, the notes you are taking on Evernote, and a scan of the crowd.

One thing to note, you can?t take a partial Vine and then finish it later. The point is to shoot it in the moment.

An important thing to note though, as in all new technology, it is important to take the time to evaluate it and make sure it makes sense for you and your business. Just because something is hot and new, doesn?t mean it is neccesarily for everyone ? especially in real estate or any industry!

I will certainly be watching to see how this app evolves. Would love your thoughts, please post them below!

Interview with Fan Filmmaker Chris Notarilie of Blinky Productions ...

This is part of an ongoing series of interviews, spotlights, previews and reviews focusing on the wonderfully diverse and meta-textual world of ?Fan Discourse.?? In other words, this is where I get to delve into my geekier side and turn the focus on the creations, work and weirdness of a group that is generally not thought of as artists so much as they are thought of as consumers?the fans.? In this article, I turn my focus on Filmmaker Chris Notarilie who specializes in films that involve superheroes, superheroines, villians and even horror movie monsters.? Chris and I first spoke a few years ago when I was writing for ComicBloc and Online Webmagazine specializing in comic books and other fan-related issues.

Xavier: Hi, Chris!? Okay, so to start off can you tell me a little bit about yourself, how you got started and how long you have been working, things like that?

Chris Notarilie: I am a filmmaker. I started truly making movies in January 2004 when I made a short film for a contest for Wizard Magazine. It was called Baby Punisher. I didn?t win, but that was truly the 1st film I completed from beginning to end.? Ever since then, I?ve just kept doing what I love doing- making more movies.

Xavier: You are a very hands-on kind of filmmaker, meaning that you are pretty much involved at every level of the process, or if not at least know how to do practically everything that you need to make a good film.? How did this come about? What is your working philosophy?

Chris Notarilie: I am very very, very hands on.? If I could clone myself to make up a production crew, I would. I believe the more I do myself, the closer to my vision it will be in the end.? That and I?m also very paranoid and have been burned in the past when trusting other people to do the work for me. My philosophy, if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Xavier: Looking at your American Excess clip, you do a take on Martin Scorsese and the type of cinema verite?, which we find in say a movie like Mean Streets.? So, I have to ask who are some of your inspirations, who do you look up to as a filmmaker, writer and editor.

Chris Notarilie:? Robert Rodriguez, John Carpenter, Michael Mann, Tony Scott, Martin Scorsese and Sam Raimi.? They are my favorite directors and all inspire me in their own ways.

Xavier: You do a variety of different kinds of film everything from horror, comedic bits like the Blue Beetle PSA?s, full length original features like The Protector; but Comic inspired movies seem to be your forte?.? What drew you to fan-made filmmaking?

Chris Notarilie: I wanted the attention. I?m like a little kid craving the spot light. I want people to know who I am and what I do so I make fan films to grab their attention. After they see my fan work, if they like it, they tend to stick around and check out my original work on my site too. It?s all part of my master plan. Evil, isn?t it?

Xavier: Definitely, as I say, Prime Evil, evil that is divisible only by you and the number 1.? Have you found any limitations working with copyrighted characters?

Chris Notarilie: Not yet- THANK GOD. Though I can?t sell anything that?s copyrighted- I?m still content with just making. I?m more concerned with exposure than I am with making money. Don?t get me wrong, money is nice too, but it will come to me when my time is ready.

Right now, I must spread the word of Blinky. That is my sole mission right now.

Xavier: Have you had anyone official have to ?talk? to you about using a certain character, name or likeness?

Chris Notarilie: I?ve spoken to various official and creative entities, ranging from Warner Bros execs to comic artists to regular fans. Everyone has their own opinion, but for the most part, people have been pretty supportive. Though the execs aren?t particularly supportive of my efforts, they are grateful I am not selling my work nor am I making them look bad. So- so far, so good.

Xavier: What are the pluses of using characters that people already know and identify with?

Chris Notarilie: You already have a fanbase you can immediately tap into rather than creating one from scratch. Plus, it?s like being in a secret club; only you and a few other people in your inner circle know the subject matter.? This makes it even better when you see a fan film loaded with inside jokes that only you and fellow fans get. It?s nice and I like doing that in my films.

Xavier: There doesn?t seem to be as many Marvel or independent comic company?s characters in your films; do you have a fondness for DC characters?

Chris Notarilie: Yes I do prefer DC over Marvel, but don?t let that fool you. I just haven?t gotten around to Marvel yet.? But I will. I see a Deadpool or Spiderman related movie happening somewhere down the line. No promises yet. But something will happen. (And has happened since then check out the website!)

Xavier: I feel the same way about DC; something about the characters just clicks with me.? Your work goes back and forth between almost slapstick humor to being deadly serious. How do you work and how do you decide whether you are going to do a serious movie or a comedy?

Chris Notarilie: That always depends on who I?m making a movie about and who?s in it. There are just some characters I CANNOT take seriously. And for that, I make them a comedy. Others, they are serious or the straight man in any joke. For them, I can make dead serious films.

Take Catwoman and Power Girl. I just can?t see Catwoman wise cracking- EVER.? Power Girl on the other hand- yes. She has a comment about everything.? But looking at it the other way around.? Catwoman works better in a serious setting due to her violently mean streak where as Power Girl doesn?t fit so well.? She?s just so easy to make fun of and has so often been the butt of many jokes- plus she?s so strong, she can?t haul off and maim someone, it just wouldn?t work.? Catwoman on the other hand, she has no powers so she doesn?t have to pull her punches. Like I said, it depends on who I choose to make a movie about.

Xavier: How do you cast these films? Who are these folks?? Do you do open auditions?

Chris Notarilie: I cast on Craigslist and various other casting sites.? Everyone is a professional actor and I cast them based on ability as well as accuracy to the portrayal of the character. I just happen to have been super lucky lately with my actor?s likenesses to their characters as well as talent.

Xavier: What sorts of things do you have planned for the future?

Chris Notarilie: Little broad don?t you think? (Chuckles.) Well for starters- world domination, as well as a plethora of feature films, all the while continuing to make fan films. I love fan films and even if I become famous, I won?t stop. They?re just too fun.

Xavier: You?re right that was kind of broad.? How have things like the Internet, YouTube helped or hindered your career?

Chris Notarilie: They are amazing tools. I can reach so many more audiences via the internet now, then I ever could have at any other point in time. This day and age rocks. Viva Youtube!

Xavier: Are you a fan of any of the other fan filmmakers out there? Do you have any favorite films?

Chris Notarilie: Robert Tovani- director of Robin (2005). Nick Murphy-director of Tombe Raider (Tears of the Dragon). I know I?m probably forgetting a few people, but those guys are at the top of my list right now. And I like them not just because of their films, but because of who they are as people. They aren?t jaded or snobby. They are regular guys who happened to make good movies too.? And that?s what I am and I appreciate meeting more people like that.

Xavier: Looking particularly at fight scenes, I can see how a fight scene in say Catwoman Principles is different than say the scenes between Power Girl and Bizarro in I?m Power Girl, Dammit! Are fight scenes a particular challenge and how has your craft grown with time?

Chris Notarilie: I have friends who are stunt men and martial artists; they do the task of working out the fights for me, which is a real load off my back. I appreciate it because it allows me to focus more on the shooting of the film instead. Though, I did choreograph the simple fight in PG2. But it?s no comparison to my other film?s fights. But as a filmmaker, I do believe I should learn the fight too. I know all the combos and what to call them. I feel by learning the fight, it will help me get where I need to be in during the fight to get THAT shot.

Xavier: Speaking of Power Girl, you have mentioned here and there that you are planning a movie based on the JSA, my personal favorite team.? How has that come about and can you give us any hints as to what you might have in store with this film?

Chris Notarilie: I decided to do it after I realized I had already made half the team?s costumes. I have Power Girl, Hourman and Wildcat. I was also planning a Mr. Terrific movie, but then I figured, screw it, lets do JSA all the way.? The story will be a 30-minute TV pilot. The idea is to eventually pitch it. It will be set now and I will be updating certain parts of the JSA?s history to fit better, but the character origins will be the same.? And I will also share the team?s roster:

Mr. Terrific (Michael Holt)

Green Lantern (Alan Scott)

The Flash (Jay Garrick)

Wildcat (Ted Grant)

Hourman (Rick Tyler)

Dr. Midnite (Pieter Cross)

Power Girl (Karen Starr)

They will be facing Vandal Savage and a few select members of the Injustice Society.

In my story, Vandal is ready to rule the world once more; his last true reign was during WW2 with Hitler if I remember correctly. Anyhoo, in my story, he is preparing to take over the world, but when he gets wind of Mr. Terrific reforming the JSA after 20 years of no team, he approaches them and says basically, they are only mortals. Though they may try now, sooner or later they all will die, and when that happens, he will then rule- one way or another. He?s just going to wait it out. But should they cross him, he will ?Bring it?.

I?m going for a more calm Vandal who realizes his immortality is the key to his success. So long as he knows he can live forever, he will never lose his cool. If he can?t beat his enemies, all he has to do is wait things out and eventually, they?ll die in time.

Xavier: Very interesting, I?ve always wondered why in all media Immortals seem to have the same motivations as us mere mortals, it?s very cool that you are giving this a more realistic feel and taking into account how time and position would have an effect on a characters point of view.

How are films like Bitter Sweet and The Protector different than some of your other work?

Chris Notarilie: They are originals. That?s the big difference, also they deal with different issues. Bitter Sweet is a psychological mind fucker, where as the Protector is a heart-warming drama about life. With those kinds of films I can explore different sides of my favorite craft and that?s always nice.

Xavier: What are the tools of your trade? Do you work in video? Film? What sorts of programs do you use?? How did you get the Flash to go whizzing by that policeman in The Flash (Speeding Ticket)?

Chris Notarilie: I shoot on HDV video. Edit on FCP. The flash effect was just a drawing of blur lines I made on Photoshop and superimposed them onto the footage in FCP. It was so easy even I said DUH! The key to being a great filmmaker is to be able to pull of difficult things and make them look effortless all the while not breaking your back doing it.

Xavier: Other than world domination, what would be your dream project?

Chris Notarilie: Doing a Blue Beetle and Catwoman feature for scripts that I have written. And of course, making sure Hollywood hasn?t bastardized my idea. I want to make something on par with Batman Begins but for Blue Beetle and Catwoman.

Other projects I would like to tackle are as follows: Superhero teams- JSA, perhaps I?d expand my pilot into a feature. I?m also interested in an Infinite Crisis film. Something with Power Girl, and of course- I know no one but me has the balls to do as accurately as it should be- the Death of Superman WITHOUT Brandon Routh. I would turn to Stan Winston studios to help me out with Doomsday, and Troublemaker?s Robert Rodriguez to help me in producing. I think the death can be a 3-picture deal. Part 1, the death, part 2 the reign and part 3 the real return. If I could make such a series like that, I could die a happy man.

Xavier: What would a full-length motion picture that is not based on anything fan-film inspired be like if it was done by you?

Chris Notarilie: I would like to do a full-length version of The Protector one day. He?s a great character and I?ve created a very interesting and action packed life for him. If I made a movie about him, I think it would revolutionize comics. The Protector is a character from the golden age era and he believes in the morals from that time.? He?s not corrupted like many heroes of today are.? If I made a movie about a character that pure, I think it would speak volumes to the audiences of today and hopefully set some new higher standards in human compassion.? I seriously have a lot of problems with the attention span and lack of respect from many of today?s audiences. They can be very vulgar, ignorant and unintelligible and I would love to help change all that for the better.? And if The Protector can do that, then tell me where I can sign up.

Xavier: Finally, where does Blinky come from? Who is he and what is the significance of the name?

Chris Notarilie:? Blinky the Bunny. His true origins are yet to be disclosed to the public. Perhaps some day, when he has his own movie, he will tell you who he is and where he came from. Till then, he won?t let me say.

Xavier: Thank you so much for the interview Chris, it was a real pleasure talking to you and good luck with all of your future endeavors.? I?m sure that we will be hearing a lot from you in the future and I look forward to seeing the JSA pilot and can?t wait to see The Protector made into a full-length major motion picture.

Chris Notarilie: You are very welcome.

How to make your iPhone password stronger

18 hrs.

We've?talked before?about using a longer passcode on your iPhone instead of a 4-digit pin, but as the tech blog Digital Inspiration points out, adding in accented characters adds yet another level of security.

The idea is that most people aren't going to bother dealing with accented characters (if you hold down on a letter, the available accented characters show up) when they're trying to guess your password. To use these, you first have to turn on the alphanumeric passcode. Just head into Settings > General > Passcode Lock, and turn off Simple Passcode. You'll be asked to enter in a new password, so throw in a few accented characters. It might make it a bit of a pain to enter in your passcode, but at least it's more secure.

Contrary to reports, the Irish haven't legalized drunk driving

Reports concerning an Irish county council's proposal to allow rural inhabitants to drive after drinking have been greatly exaggerated.

By Jason Walsh,?Correspondent / January 23, 2013

Reported around the globe as a license to drive drunk, an Irish council's motion to permit rural pub-goers to get behind the wheel not only lacks force of law, it's also a slightly odd solution to a serious issue.

It's not often that a vote by five county councilors in rural west Ireland makes headline news, but Danny Healy-Rae managed it this week when he and four colleagues passed a motion to allow drinkers to drive home ? albeit at a severely restricted speed and only on barely-used backroads.

The political response? The same as that of the Irish public: bafflement and embarrassment.

Leo Varadkar, minister for transport, said he disagreed with the council's motion and stressed the affect of the story spreading across the globe. "It doesn't really send out a good message internationally about Ireland," he said.

One fact that has barely been reported in the scramble to play-up rural Irish alcoholic clich?s: It's not going to happen. As a county council motion, the proposal has no legal status.

Irish people are keenly aware of the country's drink-sodden image, with many feeling Mr. Healy-Rae's motion plays to outdated prejudices about the country.

The move may not seem so out of the blue as it first sounds, though. Not quite, anyway.

Healy-Rae proposed the motion as a response to isolation in rural areas, particularly among the elderly and would help to counter "depression and suicide." He said permits could be issued allowing holders to have "two or three drinks" and then still drive home.

"They're traveling on very minor roads, often on tractors, with very little traffic and it's not right they're being treated the same as the rest of the traveling public and they have never killed anyone," he said.?"The only outlet they have then is to take home a bottle of whiskey," he says, "and they're falling into depression, and suicide for some of them is the sad way out."

To be sure, pubs in country areas of Ireland are at the center of community life and are more than just drinking dens, which is something even the motion's critics acknowledge. And going to the pub and drinking nonalcoholic drinks is already an option, as is the option of hiring a bus.

Healy-Rae is a member of a colorful County Kerry political dynasty known for rural populism ? and occasional support for strange causes including, most recently, removing the number 13 from vehicle license plates.

He is also a pub owner ? as are three more of the total five councilors who supported the idea. Three voted against the idea, seven abstained, and 12 were absent from the meeting.

Despite widespread criticism, the motion has attracted some support. Independent Galway councilor Michael Fahy says he will raise the idea at the next council meeting.

The chances of the government agreeing to the idea? Less than the amount of alcohol in a glass of tap water. The country has worked hard in recent decades to reduce road deaths, both by upgrading the road network and by stricter enforcement of the rules of the road.

Ireland's road death rate hit an all-time low in 2012, with 161 lives lost, 25 fewer than the previous year. It is has the sixth lowest road death rate the in EU.

ONTD_Political - TW DV, RAPE: Domestic violence, rape an issue ...

Gay people in the United States are just as likely as heterosexuals to experience domestic violence, sexual violence or stalking, and bisexual women are more likely than other women to be abused, federal health experts said on Friday.

Until now, little had been known about how often violence occurred among gays and bisexuals in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said of its findings. The CDC said its report offered the first national data on the issue.

"We know that violence affects everyone, regardless of sexual orientation. This report suggests that lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in this country suffer a heavy toll of sexual violence and stalking committed by an intimate partner," CDC Director Tom Frieden said in a statement.

For example, domestic violence against a woman was reported by nearly 44 percent of lesbians and about 61 percent by bisexuals compared to 35 percent of heterosexuals. Among men, 26 percent of gays and about 37 percent of bisexuals reported partner violence compared to 29 percent of heterosexuals.

"Bisexual woman had significantly higher prevalence of virtually all types of sexual violence," the CDC said in its report.

Additionally, the CDC found the majority of women who experienced violence, regardless of their sexual orientation, faced male perpetrators.

It also looked at rape, and among female victims found that 48 percent of bisexual women and 28 percent of straight women experienced their first rape between the ages of 11 and 17 years.

The agency's findings come as Democrats push to renew the Violence Against Women Act, a bipartisan 1994 law that has been reauthorized several times but officially expired in 2011. The law aims to protect domestic violence victims by easing access to legal protection orders and preventing a victim's sexual history from being cited at trial, among other steps.

Democrats, who control the Senate, reintroduced the measure this week in both chambers of Congress. It has bipartisan support in the Senate, but it is unclear how the bill will progress in the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, said CDC's finding support the need for his version of the bill's reintroduction, which also includes strong protections for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

"A victim is a victim is a victim, and no victim of these crimes should be denied access to these crucial services," he said in a statement.

The CDC's study, which reviewed 2010 data from its National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey of more than 16,000 U.S. adults, is critical for prevention programs and policies in hopes of reducing such incidents, the agency said.

It also called for more research on the issue, and said it would work with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, communities to bring more attention to the problem.

"This information is critical to informing prevention programs and policies aimed at reducing these types of victimization," it said.

For Chavez impersonator, cancer no laughing matter

MIAMI (AP) ? It's an hour before showtime, and Gustavo Rios is transforming himself into Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

A makeup artist paints his skin a dark olive tone. A plastic mole is glued strategically on the upper right corner of his forehead. Large, latex ears and a short, black wig cover his head as he squints and purses his lips in front of a mirror.

He mimics Chavez with comical, exaggerated precision, his voice billowing in a triumphant tone and his hands prancing in the air. It's a mockery that came with a price in Venezuela, where the boisterous, domineering president has carefully cultivated his image as a widely supported savior: Rios was taunted, threatened, robbed, even had his car set ablaze.

Rios fled Venezuela, and now his act is featured in a Spanish-language show broadcast on U.S. airwaves. Meanwhile, the real Chavez lies ill in a Cuban hospital recovering or suffering ? no one seems to know exactly ? from complications following cancer surgery in December.

He dresses in the president's iconic red and pokes fun at being in the hospital. On a recent show, he stood chained to an IV but danced to the 1980 hit "Celebration" as he played Nintendo Wii. What he doesn't do: mention the word "cancer." Rios knows what cancer is like. His own father has it.

"Cancer is a very grueling illness," he says, his voice solemn.

Rios first did his Chavez impression on a radio show called "Con Las Pilas Puestas" ? "With the Batteries On" ? in Maracaibo, a city along the western coast of Venezuela that is his family's hometown. He pretended to talk with the presidents of Cuba, Russia and Iran and Osama bin Laden about conquering the world. On one episode, he schemed to kidnap the president of the United States and torture him with hours of Mexican norteno music, a folk genre that features the accordion and has roots in polka.

Not everyone thought it was funny. Supporters of Chavez, who for years has condemned U.S. capitalism and pushed a socialist platform, called him names: Weakling. Imperialist. Oligarch. On four occasions, his car was robbed. Then it was set on fire outside the studio in midday. There were threatening messages, notes that promised death.

Eventually, he took his wife and 3-year-old son and filed for political asylum in Miami, home to the largest Venezuelan population outside the South American country ? most of them fiercely anti-Chavez.

"It was terrible," he says. "Leaving my family was the worst."

He had no contacts, no real way of making a name for himself in radio again. So the now 40-year-old comedian did what most immigrants do: He washed dishes. Delivered pizzas. Painted buildings. Meanwhile, Rios also put together a demo tape of his impressions ? he does more than 80 public personalities ? and dropped it off at studios. A Cuban actor who had worked in Venezuela and was on the radio in Miami heard it and called him for an interview.

"He was one of the first people I listened to imitating Chavez," said the actor, Omar Moynelo. "For me, it was a great find."

More and more Venezuelans were leaving their country and settling in Miami. There were comedians in the city imitating Fidel Castro, but no one impersonating Chavez.

Four years ago, Rios landed a job on MegaTV. Around the same time, his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Rios was still waiting for his U.S. citizenship and could not go back to Venezuela to be with him. As his father went through chemotherapy and radiation, Rios tried to console him on the phone, send money and make him laugh with clips of his impressions.

Then, nearly two years ago, Chavez was diagnosed with the same disease. Officials have never confirmed what type of cancer he has, but Chavez has now undergone repeated surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. He has not been seen in public since Dec. 11.

At first, Rios thought it was another temporary setback or even a ploy; Chavez would go to Cuba and emerge victoriously once again. But then came the day of his inauguration. Chavez was still absent. Rios and the writers at MegaTV were careful to strike a balance: Funny but not cruel. And if it is confirmed Chavez is in his final days, Rios says he'll stop the act altogether.

"A sickness like that, no one should make fun of," he says.

So Rios skirts around it. Felipe Viel, the host of "Esta Noche Tu Night," tells the audience they are getting a live transmission from Chavez's hospital room. Rios then appears in a red pajama and green military jacket. Sometimes, he is in a wheelchair, ill but startlingly robust. He acts childish and throws pills on the floor.

On Thursday's episode, he was up and swaying his hips to a Nintendo dance game. A nurse in a low-cut white uniform entered the room. He flirts, and she flirts back. He resists her romantic proposition.

"The paparazzi will take our photos!" he exclaims.

"Speaking of that," the nurse with curly, blond hair says, "did you see the photo in El Pais?"

Earlier Thursday, the Spanish newspaper had withdrawn a photo from its website and print editions that alleged to show Chavez with tubes in his mouth after discovering it was fake.

The phone rings. It's the secretary of the Organization of American States. She's coming to visit. The fake Chavez quickly hides all evidence of his Nintendo games.

Rios says he wants to make those jokes in Venezuela the way U.S. comedians imitate and make fun of presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

"I want the Chavistas to laugh with us," he says. "You have to know how to laugh at yourself."

And he wants to be in Venezuela with his father, who is still undergoing chemotherapy. But he knows his imitations aren't welcome there and worries about what might happen if he returns. It won't be safe to mock Chavez there until he's gone, and by then, Rios will have to find a new act.

In Miami, his Chavez and other impersonations have earned him recognition. People notice and thank him on the streets for making them laugh. At the studio, an audience of about 20 people sit in metal folding chairs, chuckling at his charades. It's a momentary relief, for them and Rios.

"It helps me get rid of all that energy," he says, "all those things one carries inside."

Teen confesses: Film inspired murder of mom, sister

By Scott Gordon, NBCDFW.com

A 17-year-old wrote in a confession released Thursday that the horror movie remake of "Halloween" gave him the idea to kill his mother and sister.

Jake Evans is on trial for the Oct. 3 slayings of his 15-year-old sister, Mallory, and mother Jami?in their upscale Aledo home.?The confession was introduced as evidence.

In a four-page written confession to police hours after his arrest, Evans said he had watched the remake of "Halloween" three times earlier that week.

The 2007 Rob Zombie film is about a 10-year-old boy who murders several people and kills a number of others 15 years later.

While watching it, I was amazed at how at ease the boy was during the murders and how little remorse he had," Evans wrote. "Afterward, I was thinking to myself it would be the same for me when I kill someone."

Later, as his mother and sister watched the presidential debate that night, he said he "just sat in the living room thinking about how I was going to kill my family."

He wrote that he got a knife.

"I went back upstairs and kept pacing back and forth imagining killing Mallory," he said. "Thoughts of causing her pain kept entering my mind and were really bothering me. But then I'd think about the times she hurt my feelings."

More news from NBCDFW.com

He later knocked on her bedroom door and asked her to watch the comedy movie "Water Boy."

Then he changed his plans.

"After a while, I thought to myself that if I were to kill my mom and Mallory, I wouldn't want them to feel anything, so I decided to kill them both with the .22 revolver I stole from my Grandpa," he wrote.

He said he thought about it some more.

"I then spent probably over an hour walking nervously around the house thinking how life will never be the same and how I would never see them again," he wrote.

He said he knocked on sister's door again and told her their mother needed her.

"She came out and out of the corner of her eye she saw me pointing the gun at her," he said. "She thought I was joking and told me that I was freaking her out. I shot her in the back and then the head."

'Dreadful and terrifying'
He then went to the study and shot his mother three times.

"In shock, I ran to my room and was screaming at the top of my lungs that I am really messed up and that I killed my mom and sister," he wrote.

"As I emptied the shells on my bed, I heard noizes (sic) and realized that Mallory was still alive," he said. "While I loaded the gun back up, I was shouting that I was sorry and then ran as fast as I could to kill her. I made sure my mom was dead and shot her again in the head."

He said he placed the gun on the counter and called 911.

Sheriff's deputies found the bodies of his mother and sister and arrested him.

In the last lines of his confession, he wrote: "I know now though that I'm done with killing. It's the most dreadful and terrifying thing I will ever experience. And what happened last night will haunt me forever."

McDonald's fish to get 'sustainable' tag

18 hrs.

McDonald's says it will be the first national restaurant chain to carry a label from a group that certifies sustainable fishing practices.?

The blue "ecolabel" from the Marine Stewardship Council certifies that the Alaskan Pollack used in McDonald's Filet-O-Fish sandwiches come from suppliers with sustainable fishing practices.?

Major retail chains including Wal-Mart and Whole Foods already use the council's label. The nonprofit group is paid a royalty fee from companies that use its label. For McDonald's, that means the fee would be based on sales of its fish offerings, such as the Filet-O-Fish and the Fish McBites that will be launched as a limited-time offer next month.?

The Marine Stewardship Council, based in Seattle, isn't the only group that offers consumer labeling for seafood. Last year, for example, Whole Foods also stopped carrying wild-caught seafood that's "red-rated," which indicates it's either overfished or caught in a way that harms other species.?

The move reflects the growing concerns among consumers about the sources of their seafood. Major supermarket chains, including BJ's Wholesale Club, have also moved recently to try to make their seafood selections more sustainable.?

The Marine Stewardship Council has about 300 fisheries in its program, representing between 12 to 14 percent of the world's fisheries, said Kerry Coughlin, the group's regional director for the Americas. Fisheries can go through a confidential pre-assessment phase to get guidance on whether they're ready for certification. Coughlin said about 30 to 40 percent of fisheries aren't ready when they start the pre-assessment phase, but that more than 90 percent obtain certification after beginning the full, official assessment process.?

McDonald's gets all its fish in the U.S. from a single Alaskan Pollack fishery, Coughlin said. The chain's restaurants in Europe already use the council's label.?

A spokeswoman for McDonald's, Christina Tyler, said the all U.S. stores should have the labeling by early February. McDonald's will promote the certification on packaging for other products, including Happy Meals and drinks.?

The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., stopped using Eastern Baltic Cod in 2007 because of sustainability concerns. Since then, Tyler said the company has sourced Alaskan Pollock and New Zealand Hoki exclusively from fisheries with the Marine Stewardship Council's label. Now the chain uses only Alaskan Pollock for its fish items in the U.S.?

The trends I noticed at CHA?

I did finish up my CHA spotlights (aka favorites!) and such, but I wanted to type up one more piece sharing the trends I noticed at the show. I always think it is interesting to see what?s happening and what seems to be hot at the moment. Oh, I don?t necessarily follow the trends, but I do admit that in my own crafting I do have things that pop up a lot now ? and won?t six months from now. I think it?s just all part of the creative process. Anyhow ? here?s what I noticed:

I believe we?ll see is the continued rise of the ?designer? lines. Oh yes I?know that this isn?t technically something new and that often we know the face behind the product?design (Tim Holtz, Claudine Hellmuth, and Heidi Swapp come immediately to mind) ? however I feel like?more companies are reaching out to well known crafters and doing signature lines within their brand. Yes, companies we already know and love are teaming up with amazingly talented (and well known) crafters to produce signature lines. With Crate Paper?s Maggie Holmes line, and Webster?s Pages teaming up with Allison Kreft (two of the most talked about lines of the show) I would not be surprised if we see even more special partnerships and designer names on lines at future shows. Finnabair for Prima, Dear Lizzy and Amy Tangerine for American Crafts ? there were more than ever before at this show ? and more importantly they were many of my top picks as well!

Dies
Are dies easy to manufacture? I?m asking because stamp companies, paper companies ? heck it seemed like many companies are coming out with their own dies now. The majority of these are the super thin dies that will work in a Sizzix Big Shot (or other similar die cutting manual machine). I?m wondering if they are the new clear stamp. Remember when EVERYONE made clear stamps to go with their lines?

Feathers
Putting birds on things has been around a while, and feathers aren?t brand new, but I do see them taking many more forms and being very popular at this show. Will they work great for spring? Be lovely on Easter pages? we shall see!

Insta/phone/polaroid love
Cameras have always been a common theme that we see, but one big trend at this show was polaroid-like paper frames, camera images, and even (Crate Paper) overlays for your pictures that will give instagram-like filters to your photos. More items are being made suitable for square and/or smaller photos and it seems like manufacturers are trying to make sure printed square pics from apps like hipstsamatic or instagram have a nice pretty place to rest in our scrapbooks. I was happy to see cameras in the form of stamps, papers, and even as booth decorations!

One big happy family
Are you exclusively a card maker? Do you only do a very specific look and type of project? Well, that?s fine. But don?t expect to have your crafty world remain an exclusive bubble. The days of separation are over ? there is no longer a ?card maker? or ?scrapbooker? or ?stamper? industry. It is most definitely a paper crafting world. I overheard a woman making a barbed comment about ?ugh, scrapbookers? and I just bit my tongue! Because I don?t think she realizes- embracing all forms of crafting is the way of the future. Don?t judge! Just do your thing and have fun lady.

In order to survive companies products appeal to a broad range of types of crafters. Oh, styles (such as whimsical, grungy, shabby chic?) still apply, but there isn?t the ?we are a scrapbooking company? or ?we make products for card makers? type separation that used to be so very strong. I feel like this is what will really help companies that are still in business ? and this year the show floor had NO separation of types of booths it was all mixed together. Which just reinforces that?we are all?in the wonderful hobby of crafting together.

Party Time:
I think this one is partly because using paper craft supplies to make DIY home decor and party decorations and favors has long been a thing that we crafters do. But I also believe it is also influenced by the pinterest effect. What do I mean? So many party and DIY and creative goodness can be found all over pinterest ? and I think that it has inspired companies to show off how their products can be used that way (Brenda Walton for Sizzix and the Pebbles Inc booth both did incredible with this!) and also the success of Martha Stewart Crafts items I believe has sparked some manufacturers into creating products that can be used for parties as well.

Pie
As in charts. Yeah, I noticed pie charts springing up in die cut, stencil, and I think even paper form. I came home with a cute little pie chart die, I?ll be using that and sharing more soon. I kind of like it ? reminds me of the sunburst trend in a way and cound certainly be used that way. We shall see.

Rub-ons making a come back?
Jenni Bowlin and Tim Holtz both offered rub-ons this show ? as did American Crafts (Dear Lizzy line) and many others. Are the once favorite product coming back? I felt like they went away because of their definite shelf life and because if not made well they can be a disaster. Will they stick this time around?

Silhouette inspired cuts:
In 2012 I saw so many amazing cuts from the Silhouette Cameo that I am seriously considering buying myself one. Now I wonder ? do I need to? I saw TONS of die cut pre-made products that reminded me of things I?d seen cut from a electronic machine. Dear Lizzy?s line for American Crafts had some notable ones, as did Allison Kreft (Webster?s Pages), Basic Grey,?and other companies too.

Washi mania:
Whether it?s actual washi, tissue tape, masking-like tape or whatever ? tape is EVERYWHERE and by everyone. Seriously more companies had some tape than not.

My friend Melissa noticed an emerging hot trend (which I will not mention here as she?s not blogged about it yet!) that I?m excited about ? more on that some other time!??Those are the trends I noticed this show ? what have you noticed?
