Bo Xilai's son defends disgraced Chinese politician

Bo Guagua (left) defended his father, Bo Xilai, in a statement he posted to his Tumblr.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Bo Guagua said "it is hard for me to believe the allegations"
  • NEW: The 24-year-old is the son of disgraced politician Bo Xilai
  • He posts a statement on Tumblr defending his father
  • Bo Xilai is accused corruption, abuse of power and adultery

(CNN) -- The son of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai says the laundry list of allegations leveled against his father contradicts "everything I have come to know about him throughout my life."

Bo Xilai was once considered a top contender for the Politburo Standing Committee, the team of nine politicians who effectively rule China. But last week, the Communist Party relieved him of his duties and expelled him.

He also faces possible criminal charges in connection with the murder of a British businessman, a crime for which is wife has been convicted.

On Saturday, Bo's son, Guagua, posted a statement on Tumblr, a microblogging site, where he defended his "upright" father. The statement made no mention of his mother.

"Personally, it is hard for me to believe the allegations announced against my father, because they contradict everything I have come to know about him throughout my life," the younger Bo wrote.

"Although the policies my father enacted are open to debate, the father I know is upright in his beliefs and devoted to duty."

In an e-mail to CNN on Sunday, the son declined to comment further on the case. He said his statement posted to Tumblr was all he could say at the moment.

The statement followed news Friday by the state-run Xinhua new agency that the elder Bo had been expelled from the Communist Party and faced prosecution on criminal charges. The Xinhua report on his expulsion painted a portrait of corruption, abuse of power and improper sexual relationships.

The party said the politician made "severe mistakes" in the killing of the British businessman and a diplomatic incident involving a police official, Xinhua reported.

Investigators cited influence peddling, bribery and womanizing, new details found in the course of the party's investigation.

"Bo had or maintained improper sexual relationships with a number of women," the state news agency said.

He also took advantage of his power to seek profits and received bribes, and his family "accepted a huge amount of money and property from others," Xinhua said.

The son said he could not reconcile the man accused of such acts and the man he knows as his father.

"He has always taught me to be my own person and to have concern for causes greater than ourselves. I have tried to follow his advice," he said in the statement.

"At this point, I expect the legal process to follow its normal course, and I will await the result."

The elder Bo is a charismatic, albeit controversial, politician who launched a "smashing black, singing red" campaign in the southwestern city of Chongqing that promoted Communist ideology and zealously cracked down on organized crime.

His economic programs, which included millions spent on social welfare, made him a popular leader in Chongqing. But analysts say his populist policies and high-profile personal style were seen as a challenge to the more economically liberal and reform-oriented faction that dominates the current party leadership.

The politician's fortunes changed when news surfaced this year that his wife, Gu Kailai, was a suspected accomplice in the poisoning of businessman Neil Heywood.

Heywood died in November in Chongqing, where the elder Bo was the Communist Party chief. His death was originally blamed on excessive alcohol consumption.

The politician was soon stripped of his top posts for "serious breach of discipline." In August, his wife received a suspended death sentence after a seven-hour trial.

The case also put the son under scrutiny as reports emerged over his lavish student lifestyle. Photographs of him bare-chested with his arms around women at a party at the University of Oxford were widely published and received badly in China.

The father defended his son when the reports first came out, accusing people of trying to make the 24-year-old look bad.

The younger Bo graduated from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government in May. He previously attended the University of Oxford, graduating in 2010.

Wang Lijun, the former police chief of Chongqing, set off the controversial story on February 6, when he fled to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu and told American diplomats that Gu was a suspected accomplice in a murder case.

After his request for asylum was turned down, Wang left the consulate and was taken away by Chinese officials. But his accusations rocked the world's most populous nation.

Wang last week was sentenced to 15 years for defection, cover-up, bribe taking and abuse of power.

CNN's Jason Kessler and Paul Armstrong contributed to this report.

There is a substance in your blood that most people have never heard of, yet can increase the risk for over fifty diseases.? It?s called homocysteine and getting your levels of this substance under control is one of the greatest things you can do for your health.

Nutrition expert Patrick Holford indicates in his book, The New Optimum Nutrition Bible that not only does homocysteine damage arteries, the brain, and genetic material (DNA), it can increase the risk for over fifty diseases, including:? Alzheimer?s disease, cancer, depression, diabetes, heart attack, and stroke and rheumatoid arthritis.

Homocysteine is a type of protein that is produced by the body and found in the blood.? It is ideally found in low levels.? Produced from an amino acid called methionine which is found in protein foods in the diet, the body normally turns homocysteine into beneficial substances including:? glutathione or S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe).

Too much homocysteine can build up in the blood increasing the formation of plaque on blood vessel walls and clogging and hardening of the arteries?atherosclerosis.

ADATA's got an 8.9mm thick portable USB 3.0 drive, limbos under the competition by a millimeter

ADATAs got an 89mm thick portable USB 30 drive, limbos under the competition by a millimeter

When it comes to your device being the "world's thinnest" or not can be decided by a single millimeter. Just days after Toshiba unveiled its 9mm-thick 500GB external hard drive, ADATA has knocked a little more off its own enclosure and declared victory. It's releasing the DashDrive Elite HE720, a stainless steel USB 3.0 drive that measures in at 8.9mm-thick, and size is not the only department where it's making an end-run around ol' Tosh -- it's also $25 dollars cheaper, costing $90. In more mundane news, users who pick up the unit are entitled to snag a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security and it'll be available shortly.

"Fringe" to end run on Fox with "love letter" to fans

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Fringe" fans may be feeling bittersweet as the sci-fi TV show enters its final season, but executive producer J.H. Wyman pledged on Wednesday to give fans a satisfying conclusion and "the love letter they deserve."

"Fringe," co-created by J.J. Abrams of "Lost" and "Alias" fame, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, follows a FBI team who use methods outside of mainstream science to solve mysteries relating to a parallel universe.

The fifth and final season, which starts on Friday on Fox, will pick up from the "Letters in Transit" episode in April 2011 that threw the series into year 2036, where the original Fringe team is freed from encasement in amber and must face a dystopian society.

Wyman, also a writer on "Fringe," told reporters in a conference call on Wednesday that he "fell in love" with setting the story in the future, and wanted to focus the final season on the show's characters.

Peter Bishop (played by Joshua Jackson) and Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) provide the main love story of the series as their relationship struggles in the face of time-bending obstacles.

"No love story worth telling is an easy love story. It's the hills and the valleys that make a relationship, in my opinion, really dynamic and worth watching and the harder the tale, the more worthy the pay-off," Wyman said.

While he declined to reveal details of upcoming plots, Wyman said he hoped fans would "enjoy the surprises", and that the ending would satisfy audiences and give the fans "the love letter they deserve."

"I want to feel that my characters evolved in a place that they deserved, sometimes maybe unexpectedly, but logically they've come to a conclusion that makes me feel satisfied," Wyman said.

"I want to tell these real odyssey stories about these people, and give them a little more sense of continuity," he added.

"Fringe," which combines science fiction with elements of police procedural drama, debuted on Fox in 2008 averaging 10 million viewers in its first season. It became a cult favorite, but ratings slipped last season to about 4.2 million viewers.

Selecting An Older Citizens ' Residence Or Retirement Home In ...

Selecting An Older Citizens ? Residence Or Retirement Home In Barbados.

Posted by viking12 on Sep 26, 2012 in Elder Care

Selecting a retirement home is a crucial call, and it's critical to make certain that the facility you choose will supply the highest standard of care for your deeply loved on. There are 3 main steps that can be taken to find the care home that offers the services, environment, and way of living options that most closely match your loved one?s wants and preferences. Planning in advance, bothering to research your options, and rigorously researching a few facilities before deciding will provide help to make sure that the care home you select will be of assistance to your loved one maintain health, contentment, and grace. ? Ask folks you trust, like your health practitioner, family members, buddies, neighbours, and clergy if they've had positive experience with a selected retirement home Keep a listing of the names of these facilities and look up contact info for each utilizing the telephone book or net. Step one : Find care home facilities in your neighborhood.

To make these programs successful, there are specific techniques that we should focus upon. First, a practical quality guarantee system should be established. Without an all-inclusive nursing guide, the nursing houses will not be in a position to play their roles and responsibility to look after each resident. In all likelihood the residents will complaint if they don't seem to be well-treated. Next, if you're aware about the nursing home?s trend, you'll find out the most vital problem is inadequate of manpower. The new rules dump many chances for unwed candidates to cover some assets but married candidates will continue to be able to shelter virtually any sum of money.

As the Medicaid suitability standards tighten, denials for Medicaid are on the rise. Some Geriatric Care Chiefs and lawyers who focus on Elder Law are helping families get qualified while shielding some assets. The truth is that ICP Medicaid has become hard to get without pro help. With that in mind, the armchairs that populate this room must be 2 things. They have to be terribly tough, as an investment in a variety of armchairs will mean the chairs are sat on for extended periods and could be moved around a good deal. The other side of lounge furniture its comfort, with so much sitting around watching or playing games, these armchairs must be exceedingly comfortable. Lounge chairs will maybe be moved around less than other sorts of furniture, and so could be a tiny larger than in other bits of a nursing or residential care home.

Facebook stops asking you to snitch on your friends

9 hrs.

Earlier this week, the Internet had a mini meltdown over false reports that Facebook may?ve posted users' old?private messages.

Though it was swiftly deemed untrue,?even the French government demanded answers on this non-scandal. All of that overshadowed the real news, a creepy misstep of which the world?s largest social network really?is guilty: asking Facebook users to identify friends who may be using fake names on the site.

?Help Us Make Facebook Better,? read a survey prompt that kicked up a comparatively minor amount of ire when it made the rounds on Twitter. ?Is this your friend?s real name?? the survey went on, showing a photo of one of the recipient?s Facebook friends and multiple choice answers, ?Yes,? ?No,? ?I don?t know this person,? and ?I don?t want to answer.?

?Your response is anonymous and won?t affect your friend?s account,? Facebook assured on the poll question, which Facebook representive?Fred Wolens reiterated to NBCNews.com.?

Though Facebook does have a real name policy, Wolens said this particular poll was one of many anonymous surveys Facebook uses to tweak its algorithms. He provided the following company statement:?

This was a limited survey we have already concluded. We are always looking to gauge how people use Facebook and represent themselves to better design our product and systems. We analysed these surveys only using aggregate data and responses had zero impact on any user's account.

According to Wolens, the survey was received by a small amount of users. Exactly how small, he wouldn?t say. News of it?spread when?Twitter user @chapeaudefee tweeted a screenshot and the comment, ?Facebook wants to know if your friends? names are real. Are you going to be the snitch??

Outraged? Probably. You know how you love to be outraged at Facebook. Shocked? Not so much.?

The Internet is currently so unperturbed by this latest turn, YouTube has yet to produce a single ?Hitler reacts to Facebook asking you to snitch on your friends? video ? though a long history of totalitarian regimes asking its citizens to turn on their neighbors is not lost on those who are offended by the poll, despite its reassurances.

?The whole idea of snitching is highly dodgy,? writes privacy blogger Paul Bernal.??It?s creepy ? and it helps build at atmosphere of distrust, breaking down the very things that make social networks good,? he continues. ?The social relationships that are the heart of Facebook are meant to do ?good? things ??not be a route by which bad things are spread.?

Rocket Readings: Sales Training Article: Solution Sales Dead

Sales Training Article: Solution Sales Dead:by?

By John Holland, Chief Content Officer, CustomerCentric Selling? - The Sales Training CompanyRead?this article to learn if solution sales is in fact dead in today's buyer marketplace and improve sales performance.
There have been a number of articles lately indicating the role of a salesperson is changing. It is difficult to disagree. Since we started teaching sales training workshops in 2002, buyer control of buying cycles has significantly increased. A recent Corporate Executive Board study stated: "nearly 60% of typical purchasing decisions (researching solutions, ranking options, setting requirements, benchmark pricing, and so on), are completed before engaging with vendors and talking with salespeople." The study goes on to say, "solution sales reps can be more of an annoyance than an asset" to knowledgeable buyers.
I agree with the findings that buyers go much further before contacting sellers, but challenge some of the conclusions that were drawn. sales training workshopsLet me begin by limiting this discussion to relatively complex offerings that could include an offering as well as implementation support or other professional services. Painting with a broad brush, efforts to get organizations 60% of the way through buying cycles, prior to interaction with a salesperson, have the following characteristics:
  • Often initiated by mid to lower levels within the company
  • Most internet research is done by lower level individuals
  • Most of the information on vendor websites is product versus outcome focused
  • Virtually impossible to determine implementation costs and professional services needed
  • Limited ability to select the "best" offering
  • Often no business outcomes defined until senior management is approached for funding
  • Without value, many of these "buying cycles" result in making "no decision"
The results of many weeks or months of research may resemble an RFP issued to vendors that lists functional specs, but no desired business outcomes that would offset the costs. The preferred vendor is often the one that has what are perceived to be the best features at the best price, without regard for whom can deliver the best cost vs. benefit.
As it relates to a seller being "an annoyance", traditional selling as described in my previous blog is in conflict with the way knowledgeable buyers want to buy. Sellers often want to try to change buyer requirements in attempting to become the preferred vendor. Premature efforts (doing so before establishing credibility and allowing buyers to articulate what they think their requirements are) will provide poor buying experiences and can be annoying.
"Solution" sales are best initiated proactively at executive levels by uncovering business outcomes that can be improved. Gaining access to committee members to quantify potential value before doing extensive research is a logical way to proceed for all parties involved. Unless there is sufficient value, it makes no sense to have mid to lower level people evaluate multiple vendors. "Solution" sellers operating in this mode minimize the chance of companies expending a great deal of effort by doing research in bottom up sales with a high probability of "no decision" outcomes.
Vendors are concerned about cost of sales. People fail to realize the costs buyers incur while evaluating offerings. A solution sale properly executed is a sanity check for buyers and vendors to determine there is sufficient value to allocate resources to evaluations.

Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form Factor

  • Pros Tools not required to open chassis and swap components. Solid multimedia performance.
  • Cons Cramped interior. USB 3.0 ports aren't color-coded.
  • Bottom Line With an easily accessible, IT-friendly chassis that can pop open without any tools, the Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form-Factor is a solid choice for businesses looking to save space without necessarily compromising performance, though more nimble systems in the same price range are readily available.
By Ahmer Kazi As its name suggests, the Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form Factor (9010 SFF) ($1,618 direct) falls toward the smaller side of Dell's OptiPlex 9010 commercial desktop lineup, landing between the Ultra Small Form-Factor and the full-tower desktop models. Despite its compact size, though, it packs solid hardware into an IT-friendly system that doesn't require any tools to open the chassis or swap components. For businesses looking to preserve space without necessarily compromising performance, it's a good option. That said, it's fairly pricey, and both similarly sized systems and better performers are readily available.

Design and Features
The 9010 SFF is housed in a compact chassis that measures 11.4 by 3.7 by 12.3 inches (HWD). Overall, it's not nearly as small as either the Polywell Poly i1000A-3770T or the Alienware X51 , but those systems are arguably too small, as neither can accommodate any internal expansion whatsoever. The 9010 SFF can be positioned vertically or horizontally, as demonstrated by the four rubber feet on its right side. The left side of the chassis, meanwhile, can easily be removed by pulling on the built-in handle?a convenient feature that lets your IT staff open the system up and swap out components without any tools.

The front panel is primarily covered by a gray plastic grille and features a slot-loading DVD burner, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and headphone and microphone jacks. The rear sports even more USB ports, with a pair of USB 3.0 ports alongside four USB 2.0 ports. Additionally, there's an RJ-45 port, a VGA port, three DisplayPorts, and two PS/2 ports. It's a healthy serving of ports, though it's worth nothing that two of the USB ports will be occupied by the included wired mouse and keyboard. On a related note, the 9010 SFF's USB 3.0 ports don't sport the familiar blue that's typically used to distinguish speedier USB 3.0 ports from their slower USB 2.0 counterparts. Instead, Dell has opted to place a barely noticeable "SS" (Super Speed) insignia above the USB 3.0 ports; it's not a major design flaw by any measure, but it will require your IT staff to do an extra bit of squinting when plugging in USB 3.0 peripherals.

As mentioned earlier, the real draw of the 9010 SFF is its ability to be upgraded and maintained without the use of any tools. Simply pull the handle on the left side of the chassis and you'll be greeted with an easily accessible?though densely packed?arrangement of hardware accented by easy-to-see light blue handles and grip points. Sliding out the optical drive allows for access to the 3.5-inch 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD that's encased in a metallic bay, which one removes by pulling on a circular blue lever. Removing the HDD reveals four DIMM slots on the 9010 SFF's motherboard, two of which are occupied by 4GB DDR3 SDRAM. Beneath the discrete 1GB AMD Radeon HD 7470 card is an empty half-height PCIe x16 slot, which can be outfitted with something along the lines of a low-powered graphics card or a WLAN 802.11n card after you swing out a plastic hinge that, in turn, allows you to pop out the metallic grille locked into the chassis. Overall, the 9010 SFF is remarkably easy to service and maintain despite its somewhat cramped interior.

Performance
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF

The 9010 SFF performed admirably against other small form-factor desktops, though it was handily outclassed by the larger enterprise-class HP Z220 CMT Workstation nearly across the board. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,980 landed at the bottom of the pack, coming within striking distance of the Alienware X51 (3,055 points) but trailed the rest of its peers, including the Shuttle X6100 (4,514 points). On the other hand, the 9010 SFF led the pack in our multimedia benchmark tests. It completed our Handbrake video encoding test in a brief 1 minute 4 seconds, edging past both the HP Z220 (1:05) and the Poly i1000A-3770T (1:11) by a thin margin. Likewise, it completed our Photoshop CS5 in 2 minutes 48 seconds, breezing past the Shuttle X6100 (3:00) and the Alienware X51 (3:36) without breaking a sweat. And while the 9010 SFF's Cinebench R11.5 score of 7.48 points fell a little short of the HP Z220 (7.55), it nonetheless muscled past the rest of the group, especially the Shuttle X6100 (5.68) as well as the Alienware X51 (4.91).

Despite its discrete 1GB AMD Radeon HP 7470 GPU, the 9010 SFF had difficulty breaching the 30 frames per second (fps) playability barrier in our gaming tests. To nobody's surprise, the X51 dominated the group in this arena, leaving the rest of the group gasping for air. In our Crysis benchmark tests, the 9010 SFF's performance (40 frames per second or fps in medium quality at 1,280-by-720 resolution; 4fps in high quality at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution) fell way below that of other systems, especially the HP Z220 (84fps and 11fps, respectively) and, to a more pronounced extent, the class-leading X51 (88fps and 22fps, respectively). Similarly, the 9010 SFF struggled in our Lost Planet 2 benchmark tests (16fps in middle quality at 1,280-by-720 resolution; 4fps in high quality at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution), missing the Poly i1000A-3770T by a narrow margin (18fps and 5fps, respectively) while, once again, being thoroughly outgunned by the X51 (86fps and 35fps, respectively). As far as 3D rendering goes, the 9010 SFF's 3DMark 11 scores (1,094 in Entry mode, 185 in Extreme mode) came close to that of the Poly i1000A-3770T (1,200 and 201, respectively), but, unsurprisingly, fell below both the HP Z220 (3,097 and 570, respectively) and the Alienware X51 (5,184 and 1,059, respectively).

Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF

Overall, the Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form-Factor is a good system whose shortcomings are tempered by its remarkable accessibility and expandability despite its compact profile. It doesn't perform with unbridled power like some of its peers, but its IT-friendly design makes it an appealing choice for businesses. Still, its high price tag is difficult to justify in the face of more nimble competitors, and, moreover, businesses that are purely interested in sheer computing power would be better off with our current Editors' Choice for single-processor workstations, the HP Z220 CMT Workstation.
