Demand for Barbie helps push Mattel 4Q profit up (AP)

NEW YORK ? Strong holiday demand for toys including Barbie and Monster High dolls helped push Mattel Inc.'s fourth-quarter profit up a better-than-expected 14 percent.

The company also raised its dividend and its shares rose 5 percent Tuesday.

But there were a few lumps of coal in the report, as U.S. sales dipped and weakness continued at its Fisher-Price unit.

The holiday quarter is crucial for toy makers, who can make up to half of their annual sales during the period.

Mattel, which is the No. 1 U.S. toy maker, reported Tuesday that its net income rose to $370.6 million, or $1.07 per share, for the period ended Dec. 31. That's up from $325.2 million, or 89 cents per share, a year ago.

This beat the $1 per share that analysts polled by FactSet expected.

"Mattel delivered another strong year, our third consecutive year of solid performance, which I am especially pleased about given the soft global economic backdrop and the highly promotional environment, particularly in the U.S.," CEO Bryan G. Stockton said in a statement.

Mattel's quarterly revenue edged up 1 percent to $2.15 billion from $2.12 billion. But that missed Wall Street's estimate of $2.22 billion.

A 2 percent drop in U.S. sales was offset by stronger results overseas, where revenue rose 5 percent.

.Barbie sales rose 6 percent in the quarter. Sales of for Mattel's Wheels segment ? which includes the Hot Wheels, Matchbox and Tyco R/Co brands ? increased 5 percent. American Girl sales rose 4 percent. But sales for Fisher-Price fell 10 percent. The Fisher-Price unit makes pre-school toys such as Power Wheels.

For the year, Mattel reported net income of $768.5 million, or $2.18 per share, up from $684.9 million, or $1.86 per share, a year earlier.

Annual revenue increased 7 percent to $6.27 billion from $5.86 billion.

Mattel, based in El Segundo, Calif., is also raising its annual dividend by 35 percent.

The toy maker will pay a first-quarter cash dividend of 31 cents per share on March 9 to shareholders of record on Feb. 23. Its annualized dividend is expected to be $1.24 per share. The prior-year's dividend was 92 cents per share.

The company said that its $680 million acquisition of HIT Entertainment, the company behind Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder, is expected to close on Wednesday. Mattel announced the deal in October. It will be the company's biggest acquisition in a decade.

Mattel's chief rival, Hasbro Inc., reports its financial results on Monday.

Codecademy Becomes A Platform: Now Anyone Can Write Programming Tutorials

codecademylogoOne of the most buzzed-about startups over the last few months has been Codecademy ??a site that looks to make programming accessible to just about anyone, with a variety of interactive, web-based courses that have users writing their first lines of code within a few seconds. The site's 'Code Year' program, which invites users to receive one programming lesson each week, racked up a whopping 100,000 signups in only 48 hours ? and it even has the White House?on board. But, as anyone who has spent much time on the site can attest to, Codecademy has had one big problem: there just aren't that many lessons available. And the ones that are on there sometimes seem to be moving too quickly, without many practice exercises to explore and reinforce what you've just learned. Today, the company is launching a feature that will go a long way toward fixing that. Meet the Codecademy Course Creator.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? European leaders will try to come up with ways to boost growth despite steep budget cuts across the continent when they meet in Brussels on Monday.

The 27 heads of state and government will get a taste of the popular frustration with austerity and high unemployment as they try to get to the summit in a city paralyzed by strikes.

While the official theme of Monday's meeting is boosting growth and jobs, the elephant in the room will be Greece.

Leaders aren't expected to make any decisions on a new massive bailout for Greece until international debt inspectors have issued a new report on the country's finances.

Athens' euro partners have grown frustrated with its slack implementation of spending cuts and reforms almost two years after first receiving international aid.

SUMO-snipping protein plays crucial role in T and B cell development

Saturday, January 28, 2012

When SUMO grips STAT5, a protein that activates genes, it blocks the healthy embryonic development of immune B cells and T cells unless its nemesis breaks the hold, a research team led by scientists at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center reports today in Molecular Cell.

"This research extends the activity of SUMO and the Sentrin/SUMO-specific protease 1 (SENP1) to the field of immunology, in particular the early lymphoid development of T and B cells," said the study's senior author, Edward T. H. Yeh, M.D., professor and chair of MD Anderson's Department of Cardiology.

SUMO proteins, also known as the small ubiquitin-like modifiers or Sentrin, attach to other proteins in cells to modify their function or to move them within a cell. SENP1 is one of a family of six proteins that snips SUMO off of SUMO-modified proteins. SUMOylation (SUMO modification) of proteins has been implicated in development of cancer, heart and neurodegenerative diseases, among others.

The team first analyzed the role of SENP1 in the development of lymphoids in mice and found it is heavily expressed in precursor cells, the early stages of B and T cell development.

Working with genetically modified mice they developed that lack SENP1 gene expression, Yeh and colleagues found the mouse embryos had severe defects in their T and B cells, white blood cell lymphocytes that identify and fight infection.

SUMO pins STAT5 in the nucleus

Subsequent experiments led them to STAT5, a transcription factor known to play critical roles in the development and function of immune cells. Transcription factors work in the cell nucleus, activating gene expression by connecting to a gene's promoter region.

"STAT5 works in a cycle, moving from the cytosol of a cell into the nucleus to activate genes and then back out to the cytosol," Yeh said. "We found that when STAT5 is SUMOylated in the nucleus it gets trapped there when there's no SENP1 to remove SUMO."

The team found that SUMO muscles in on two other signaling events that govern STAT5 activity - phosphorylation and acetylation.

SUMO inhibits STAT5 signaling

STAT5 is activated in the cell cytosol when the JAK tyrosine kinase attaches a phosphate group at a specific site on the STAT5 protein. This transformed STAT5 crosses the nuclear membrane into the nucleus to transcribe genes.

The team found that SUMO attaches to STAT5 close to its phosphorylation site and that cells lacking SENP1 have increased SUMOylation and decreased phosphorylation.

SUMOylation vs. acetylation

In addition to phosphorylation, acetylation of STAT5 has been shown to be essential for STAT5 to cross the nuclear membrane into the nucleus to enhance gene transcription. Yeh and colleagues found that SUMO competes directly with acetyl groups for the same binding site, inhibiting acetylation.

"Without SENP1 to remove SUMO, STAT5 can't be acetylated or phosphorylated and can't be recycled for use again," Yeh said. "We discovered that SENP1 controls lymphoid development through regulation of SUMOylation of STAT5."

Since Yeh's lab discovered SUMOylation in 1996, SUMO has been found to alter the function of thousands of proteins.

Yeh is hosting the 6th International Conference SUMO, Ubiquitin, UBL Proteins: Implications for Human Diseases Feb. 8-11 in the Dan L. Duncan Building at MD Anderson. Yeh organizes the meeting every other year.

"There used to be so little known about SUMO. Now, a protein is assumed to be SUMOylated until proved otherwise," Yeh said.

Bucks keep Lakers' road woes going with 100-89 win (AP)

MILWAUKEE ? Drew Gooden scored 23 points and the undermanned Milwaukee Bucks made sure the Lakers' road struggles continued, beating Los Angeles 100-89 on Saturday night.

Kobe Bryant scored 27 for the Lakers, who are 1-7 on the road this season.

Ersan Ilyasova and Mike Dunleavy added 15 points each for the Bucks, who managed to beat the Lakers without two of their best players.

Already scrambling to compensate for the long-term absence of injured center Andrew Bogut, the Bucks found themselves without guard/forward Stephen Jackson on Saturday because of an NBA suspension.

Bryant made six free throws to break Jerry West's franchise record for free throws made. Coming into Saturday's game, Bryant needed three makes to tie West's mark of 7,160.

Bryant also came closer to becoming the Lakers' career leader in field goals made. He was 10 of 21 from the floor Saturday, leaving him three short of the 13 field goals he needed to tie Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's franchise record of 9,935 field goals made.

Even without Bogut and Jackson, the Bucks were in control most of the way. Ilyasova hit a jumper at the horn to end the third quarter, and the Bucks took an 80-73 lead into the fourth.

The Bucks led 85-76 after an inside score from Ilyasova with just under eight minutes left, but Bryant scored five straight points to cut the lead to four.

But Luc Richard Mbah a Moute hit a jumper, then Gooden scored on a turnaround hook shot and hit a pair of free throws to run the lead back to 91-81.

Andrew Bynum scored inside, but Dunleavy hit a long jumper to give the Bucks a 93-83 lead with just over two minutes left.

After Bryant made a pair of free throws, Dunleavy drilled a 3-pointer to put the game away with 1:24 left.

The Bucks managed the beat the Lakers without Jackson, whose suspension was announced a few hours before the game.

The NBA suspended Jackson one game for verbal abuse of a game official and failure to leave the court in a timely manner at the end of the Bucks' 107-100 loss at Chicago on Friday night.

It's another rough moment for Jackson, who was benched by coach Scott Skiles in the Bucks' Jan. 20 game at the New York Knicks.

Bogut, meanwhile, fractured his left ankle in Wednesday's game at Houston and is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks ? a crushing blow for Milwaukee.

Without Bogut, the undersized Bucks faced a tough test from the Lakers' pair of 7-footers: Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

But they held their ground on defense early on, taking a 51-43 lead at halftime. The Bucks forced the Lakers into 10 turnovers in the first half, and limited Gasol to six points on 3 for 10 shooting.

Gasol finished the game with 12 points and 15 rebounds, but was 6 for 18 from the floor.

Lakers rookie guard Andrew Goudelock scored 13 points despite being hospitalized for dehydration overnight. Goudelock was coming off his best performance of the year, having scored a career-high 14 points against the Clippers on Wednesday.

Ashton Kutcher Cares About Demi Moore, Source Confirms

Ashton Kutcher has only released one public statement since Demi Moore was hospitalized - and it was a Tweet that referenced "citizen journalists" - but a source close to the actor wants to make it clear:

He does care about his ex-wife.

"Ashton is deeply concerned for Demi," the insider tells People, adding he was simply in Brazil this week for work on an ad campaign. "He still cares about her and wants the best for her. But their marriage is ending and they are both moving on with their lives."

Ashton Kutcher in Los Angeles

Kutcher touched back down in Los Angeles yesterday and will return to the set of Two and a Half Men Monday.

Meanwhile, a new story in Great Britain's The Sun says Moore has been hooked on Red Bull for over a decade. She supposedly gets crates of the energy drink delivered to her house and has often replaced meals with multiple intakes of this beverage.

This actually jibes with another report earlier in the week, which cited a partying, flirtatious Moore from a couple weeks ago, clutching a Red Bull can during a night out.

Justin Adkins: Hot Trans Guys

Last week I saw a link to a website that listed "10 Handsome Men (Who Were Born Female)." I reposted it to Facebook with the commentary, "Of course trans guys are hot." I was just excited that we, trans males, were being seen as attractive. However, the longer I thought about the list, the more troubled I became.

This list favors specific types of trans men: well-known trans guys (including Chaz Bono), white trans men, "passing" trans men, and those who display a very stereotypical type of masculinity, the kind seen in magazines such as GQ. What does this mean? It means that the type of trans male being seen as good-looking is a famous, white, masculine, passing trans guy.

As the trans community comes into its own, we need to resist giving into the assimilationist mindset. We need to make sure that we don't leave any of our own behind as we fight for trans rights. The men on this list are good-looking -- I am not challenging that -- but what is seen as hot?

Where are the hot trans guys of color? Where are the trans guys who, for a variety of reasons, are not talking testosterone? Where are the trans guys who lack the financial resources to have "top surgery," or who choose not to have surgery?

As we grow as a movement, we need to make sure that when lists like this come out, we get our messaging out, as well. We also need to be vigilant in making sure that our organizations don't fall into the same pattern that mass media and Gay Inc. have given in to, only publishing images of the assimilated trans person. We need to hold our own accountable.

My last observation regarding this list is the name itself: "10 Handsome Men (Who Were Born Female)." Personally, I am proud of the fact that I was labeled female at birth and socialized as such for many years; I think that my experience of being perceived as female made me a better person. Because of the 25-plus years I spent living in the world as female, I am more aware of the sexism and inequality that exist in our world than I would be if I had been socialized as a middle-class white man. While my birth certificate might say "female," that does not mean that I was "born female." I was socialized and raised as female, but I am male and always have been.

What can we do? As I rode the bus home from New York last week, I listened to Kiki and Herb's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," and I was reminded that we need to shape our own message. The media is trying to televise our revolution, but we need to stand up and speak out when we are not being properly represented. We need to stand up to make sure that no trans person is left behind. We need to make sure that the genderqueer people, the effeminate trans males, the trans people who will never have the privilege of going "stealth," are represented, up front. Let's not do what Gay Inc. did and only put forward the "boy next door."

So, in response to the Oddee article, I launched a new website, hottransguys.com, and the response has been great!

I am trans and proud of my community, all of it! Oh, and we are all handsome just the way we are!

Geithner presses Europe to increase crisis firewall (Reuters)

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) ? U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner pressed Europe on Friday to boost its bailout fund resources, citing the euro zone debt crisis and oil prices as the two main factors influencing the pace of the United States' economic upturn.

The U.S. economy is growing at an annual rate of around 2-3 percent, Geither told the World Economic Forum in Davos, adding that it still faces big challenges to repair damage wrought by the financial crisis.

Earlier on Friday, euro zone finance officials voiced optimism at the Forum that key building International Monetary Fund could help support Europe through its debt crisis if the euro zone boosts its bailout funds, or "firewall," he said.

"Our view is that the only way Europe is going to be successful in holding this together is for them to bring a stronger firewall and that is going to demand a bigger commitment," Geithner told the Forum.

"If Europe is able and willing to do that we believe the IMF is ready to play a constructive role," he added. "I think you'll see the IMF (be) very supportive in those efforts but not as a substitute for blocks to resolve the sovereign debt crisis (that) are gradually fitting into place.

The health of U.S. business was better than expected, Geithner said, dismissing the suggestion that tighter regulations were hampering growth.

"Profitability across the US economy is very high," he added. "What is holding the US economy back still is the aftershocks of the financial crisis and the fiscal pressure on governments."

Turning to Iran, he said Washington's drive to cut Iran's oil exports was getting excellent support from Europe and that there were positive signs from China too.

"Even over the last 6 months you're seeing a substantial intensification in (cutting) dependence on Iranian oil and my sense is also that China wants to be part of that effort because it is in China's interests not to see Iran undo the delicate balance in the Gulf," he added.

On his own future, Geithner reaffirmed that he would not expect to be asked to continue as Treasury chief if President Barack Obama wins re-election.

"Generally anybody who takes these jobs serves at the pleasure of the president," he said.

"When he asked me to stay when I thought it was the right time to leave, I agreed to stay and I agreed I would stay to the balance of this term. He accepted that aspiration of mine, and that's where it's going to come out, I think."

Geithner declined to say what he would do next: "That feels like a long way away."

Report: iPhone 5 ready for summer launch (Appolicious)

Hold on tight as we are again approaching iPhone 5 rumor season.

The latest report of an impending iPhone 5 comes from 9to5Mac, which reports that a Foxconn employee said the iPhone 5 is ready for production en route to a summer launch.

As noted by 9to5Mac, the upcoming iPhone 5 would be equipped with the following:

  • 4+ inch display (made by LG on at least one of them).

  • No teardrop-shaped devices,?as rumored in the lead up to the iPhone 4S. Samples so far have been symmetrical in thickness (also longer/wider).

  • Neither of the sample devices have the iPhone 4/4S form factor.

  • Neither of the devices are the final versions.

A summer release would almost certainly coincide with Apple?s annual Worldwide Developers Conference held in San Francisco. That was the site of the unveiling of the iPhone 4 in 2010. The iPhone 4S, an incremental yet outstanding improvement over previous models, was released last fall. Sales for that device have been more than OK according to Apple?s earnings report yesterday.

The iPhone 5 is not the only game-changing device Apple is rumored to be working on for a 2012 release. Reports of an iPad 3 and full-fledged Apple TV are also making the virtual rounds.

Stay tuned.

Meet the $2,400 Porsche smartphone (Yahoo! News)

The ultra-expensive BlackBerry is sold only in the UK and Middle East

Looking for a way to prove that you have more money than you know what to do with? Look no further than the?BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981, a $2,400 smartphone that helps the world identify you as "that guy who just spent $2,400 on a cell phone."

The specs of the?BlackBerry itself aren't nearly as impressive as you'd expect for a phone that costs about what the average U.S. worker earns in a month. What you get for your money is a 2.8-inch, 640 x 480 touch screen (for those keeping score, smaller and lower resolution than the?iPhone 4S), a?5-megapixel camera and 720p HD video recording (the iPhone 4S offers 8-megapixels and 1080p), and 768MB of RAM. In other words, the ridiculously expensive?smartphone looks obsolete when put next to a phone that came out three months ago.

The phone is hardly the most expensive we've seen ? a Danish retailer released a?$60,000 cell phone last year, and Tag Heuer offers a?$6,700 leather Android smartphone.?And what do you really get for your money? The Porsche name, an admittedly cool design, and higher-quality construction.

Our advice? Your money would be better spent buying 12 iPhone 4S's and throwing 11 of them in the trash.

Nigeria security forces kill 2 after sect attack (AP)

KANO, Nigeria ? A young man in traditional robes sobbed Tuesday as he stood in a pool of blood, surrounded by bullet-scarred walls left behind after a security raid in this northern Nigeria city recently assaulted by a radical Islamist sect.

Residents of this dusty neighborhood in the city of Kano pressed shoulder-to-shoulder inside the home, saying soldiers and others killed the man who lived here and his pregnant wife for no reason.

The local police commissioner acknowledged the attack and said it was part of the government's effort to root out the sect known as Boko Haram, responsible for killing at least 185 people in a Friday attack on the country's second-largest city.

Tuesday's killings highlight the dangers posed by possible reprisal killings and arbitrary arrests carried out by Nigerian security services who are trying to stop Boko Haram's increasingly sophisticated attacks. And while the sect remains amorphous and secretive, such assaults may only alienate the same population the government wants to save.

"He didn't belong to any religious group. Is it because of his beard?" asked relative Musa Ibrahim Fatega. "That means you cannot dress the way you are. Is it good? Is this how government is going to treat us?"

Friday's attack in Kano saw Boko Haram members spread through the city, attacking police stations, immigration offices and the local headquarters of the secret police. The attacks came after authorities refused to release suspected sect members earlier arrested, Kano state police commissioner Ibrahim Idris said.

Much of the bloodshed during Friday's attack occurred when Boko Haram gunmen threw improvised bombs made of aluminum cans and a white powder explosive, likely fertilizer. Foreign journalists saw the cans Tuesday, which had been stuffed with cotton at the top, each holding a simple detonator. Idris said gunmen threw the explosives, then fired randomly on those they saw fleeing the blast.

Police say they found 10 car bombs and about 300 of those unexploded cans after the attack ? potentially signaling Boko Haram planned further violence in the city of more than 9 million people.

Some Boko Haram gunmen also wore uniforms resembling those of the Mobile Police, the paramilitary arm of the nation's federal police, to take control of the streets during Friday's attack, Idris said. Others had camouflage uniforms like those worn by soldiers in the country, the commissioner said.

"Some of our police officers who saw them on the street thought they were their colleagues," Idris said. "They just shot them in cold blood."

The coordinated attack was Boko Haram's deadliest since they began a campaign of terror last year. Boko Haram has now killed at least 262 people in 2012, more than half of the at least 510 people the sect killed in all of 2011, according to an Associated Press count. Medical workers and emergency officials say they expect the toll may be even higher.

Boko Haram wants to implement strict Shariah law and avenge the deaths of Muslims in communal violence across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people split largely into a Christian south and Muslim north.

While the sect has begun targeting Christians in the north, the majority of those killed Friday appeared to be Muslim, officials said.

Nigeria's weak central government has been unable to stop Boko Haram's increasingly bloody attacks. Early Tuesday morning, security forces surrounded the Kano home and started a gun battle that lasted for hours. It left bullet holes peppering walls and the home's interior metal doors. Inside a living room, blood pooled around beige sofas, with a single rifle cartridge left behind.

A sedan inside the compound, also riddled with bullet holes, bore federal government license plates. The dead man previously worked for the country's education ministry, said Fatega, his relative.

Security forces took the two bodies away, leaving family members to try to figure out how to reclaim them for burial before sundown according to Islamic tradition. The scene around the house was tense as onlookers pressed against the front gate. A military attack helicopter circled overhead.

Idris said a "sister agency" carried out the attack on the house. Typically, police use that term when referring to the State Security Service, the county's secret police. Marilyn Ogar, a secret police spokeswoman, said she had no information about the attack.

Meanwhile, officers have withdrawn from Kano's streets, massing at the state headquarters where one Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated a car full of explosives Friday. Those there remain angry and tense, with one claiming he hadn't eaten for days. Coupled with a military which has used its firepower against civilians in the past, that raises the possibility of innocent people being caught up in security operations or killed, analysts warn.

Amnesty International issued a statement Tuesday warning the Nigerian government "not pursue security at the expense of human rights."

"The population in northern Nigeria are caught between being targeted by Boko Haram and Nigeria's counterterrorism measures that fail to prevent, investigate, prosecute or punish these acts," Amnesty said. Such government operations "often result in new human rights violations perpetrated by the security forces with impunity."

However, the situation remains much more simple for police.

"People attacking police stations, they are terrorists," Idris said. "That's it."

Immune system may help to trigger the menopause

The immune system may play a role in stopping a woman's biological clock.

John Perry at the University of Oxford and colleagues looked at 43 genomic studies of the menopause, covering more than 50,000 women. By comparing the age that menopause began, Perry's team identified 13 regions with possible links to menopause timing. Three of the regions were housed within genes associated with the immune system. Other regions occurred within genes that control gene repair, regulate hormones and trigger inflammation.

It's not yet clear whether the immune system is the main driver of the menopause or merely a backseat player to biological forces such as hormonal fluctuations. "This will become clearer when we have identified more of the genetic basis of menopause onset," says Perry. However, a genetic test to predict when menopause will begin is still a distant prospect.

The link between ovulation and the immune system isn't unexpected: some women with primary ovarian insufficiency, who undergo an unusually early menopause, have an autoimmune disease of the ovaries.

Which Clooney film will earn an Oscar nod?

"Bridesmaids" ? in or out? Brad Pitt ? in or out? Rooney Mara ? in or out? George Clooney ? in and out?

The Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Tuesday morning, and undaunted by our so-so performance at the Golden Globes (we called eight of the 14 movie winners), we're right back with a new set of stone-cold locks, otherwise known as guesses.

Let the nomination speculation begin:

The nominees will (probably) be ...

  1. More Entertainment stories
    1. Exclusive peek: B.H. 'Housewives' wedding finale

The show has given viewers little glimpses of Pandora's wedding through the season, but we have an exclusive clip of the f...

    2. 'Princess Bride' remake?? Inconceivable!
    3. On Megan Fox Island, you better know English
    4. Late-night 'Idol' guest? Jim Carrey's daughter
    5. Dr. Drew gets juiced up on 'Lifechangers'

Best Picture: "The Artist," "Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "The Help," "Hugo," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball"

Story: Backstage surprises from the Golden Globes

Sorry, but thanks for playing: Clooney's "The Ides of March," Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" ? and 2011's other 200-plus eligible films. FYI: As a reminder, the field will consist of anywhere from five to 10 nominees. The thinking here, based on how the guild nominations went, is that the magic number will be eight.

Story: Did 'Bridesmaids' get a boost in race for Oscar?

Best Actress: Viola Davis, "The Help," Meryl Streep, "The Iron Lady," Tilda Swinton, "We Need to Talk About Kevin," Charlize Theron, "Young Adult," Michelle Williams, "My Week With Marilyn."

Story: Silent 'Artist' shouts loudest at Critics Choice Awards

Sorry, but thanks for playing: "Albert Nobbs'" Glenn Close, "Dragon Tattoo's" Rooney Mara and "The Artist's" B?r?nice Bejo, who, despite her lead-actress nod at the so-called British Oscars, we're going to say doesn't rate ? in this category. FYI: Theron gets the edge over the on-the-bubble competition because Diablo Cody, like Woody Allen, writes nominations as much as she writes characters.

Story: Five biggest jaw-droppers of the Globes

Best Actor: George Clooney, "The Descendants," Jean Dujardin, "The Artist," Michael Fassbender, "Shame," Gary Oldman, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," Brad Pitt, "Moneyball."

Sorry, but thanks for playing: "J. Edgar's" Leonardo DiCaprio and "A Better Life's" Demian Bichir. FYI: It only looks like we cribbed from the BAFTA nominations. Truth is, we're skittish about departing from the SAG script, but especially can't see DiCaprio getting in for a film with zero momentum.

Best Supporting Actress: B?r?nice Bejo, "The Artist," Jessica Chastain, "The Help," Marion Cotillard, "Midnight in Paris" Octavia Spencer, "The Help," Shailene Woodley, "The Descendants."

Story: It was a big night for big names at Golden Globes

Sorry, but thanks for playing: "Albert Nobbs'" Janet McTeer and Mia Wasikowska, and, yikes, "Bridesmaids'" Melissa McCarthy. FYI: One, very funny movies (and the very funny people in them) get little Oscar respect. Two, actors in Allen films, comedies though they are, get a lot of respect. Add 'em up, and McCarthy is out, and Cotillard, as her beloved movie's most Academy-friendly option, is in.

Slideshow: Golden Globes red carpet (on this page)

P.S.: Streep's shout-out to Wasikowska during "The Iron Lady" star's Golden Globes speech might have swung some votes the younger actress' way had Oscar voting not closed the Friday before. (And, yes, we know, Streep name-checked Wasikowska's other noteworthy 2011 movie, "Jane Eyre," but same difference ? the pub came too late, unless, that is, Streep was lobbying for the Aussie behind-the-scenes.

And, by the by, if Streep was talking up Wasikowska to her Academy friends, then we take back everything we said about Theron in the Best Actress race, and we hereby give that slot to Wasikowska. How's that for conviction?

SNUB ALERT: Angelina Jolie, no; Christian Bale, yes

Best Supporting Actor: Kenneth Branagh, "My Week With Marilyn," Albert Brooks, "Drive," Jonah Hill, "Moneyball," Ben Kingsley, "Hugo," Christopher Plummer, "Beginners."

Sorry, but thanks for playing: "J. Edgar's" Armie Hammer, "The Ides of March's" Philip Seymour Hoffman and "Warrior's" Nick Nolte. FYI: What we said about DiCaprio? The same goes, unfortunately, for Hammer.

Euro zone finance ministers to rule on glacial Greek debt talks (Reuters)

BRUSSELS/ATHENS (Reuters) ? Euro zone finance ministers will decide on Monday what terms of a Greek debt restructuring they are ready to accept as part of a second bailout package for Athens after negotiators for private creditors said they could not improve their offer.

Resolving the issue of a Greek debt swap is key to putting Athens' debt on a sustainable path and avoiding a chaotic default that could threaten the whole currency bloc.

After several rounds of talks, Greece and its private creditors are converging on a deal in which private bondholders would take a real loss of 65 to 70 percent on their Greek bonds, officials close to the negotiations said.

But some details of the debt restructuring, which will involve swapping existing Greek bonds for new, longer-term bonds to bring Greek debt down to a more sustainable 120 percent of GDP in 2020 from 160 percent now, are unresolved.

"What I am confident of is that our offer, that was delivered to the prime minister, is the maximum offer consistent with a voluntary PSI deal," Institute of International Finance chief Charles Dallara, who is negotiating on behalf of banks and insurers holding Greek debt, told Antenna TV on Sunday.

"We are at a crossroads and I remain quite hopeful," said Dallara, who left Athens on Saturday without a deal in place.

"We will listen to the report on the negotiations, see how far they have gotten and have the ministers say what is acceptable and what is not in terms of outcome of the negotiations," one Eurogroup official said.

Once the guidance from the finance ministers, known as the Eurogroup, is clear, talks on the restructuring could be finalized later in the week.

Talks on the extent of Private Sector Involvement (PSI) in the Greek debt restructuring are a vital part of a second financing package for Athens that would keep it funded until 2014.

"We are working for a deal in time for the January 30 summit of EU leaders. The restructuring offer needs to be made in the course of February," the official said.

"Obviously there is a clear link between the PSI and the next programme and what we will be focusing on in the Eurogroup is making the next programme operational."

Without the second bailout from the euro zone and the International Monetary Fund, Greece will not be able to pay back 14.5 billion euros in maturing bonds in March, triggering a messy default that would hurt the whole euro zone economy.

There are doubts that even with a new bailout Greece's mountainous debt can be reduced to a still-painful 120 percent of GDP by 2020.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Sunday the crucial factor was that Athens should have a level of debt that was sustainable by then. "This goal must be achieved," he told German public broadcaster ARD.

STICKING POINT

Euro zone leaders agreed in October that the second bailout would total 130 billion euros, if private bondholders forgave half of what Greece owes them in nominal terms.

But Greek economic prospects have deteriorated since then, which means either euro zone governments or investors will have to contribute more than thought.

The main sticking point is coupon, or interest rate, the new Greek bonds would carry. Officials said the new bonds are likely to be 30 years in maturity and carry a progressively higher coupon, which would average out at around 4 percent.

"The euro zone ministers will examine the proposal and say whether we have a deal. If they say we don't, we're back to the negotiating table," a banking source close to the talks said.

Progress will be presented to euro zone ministers by Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

"We then expect a discussion about the coupon," a senior Greek banker close to the negotiations told Reuters.

"I believe that the private sector can accept a lower coupon than the 4 percent average, but the question then is: will the PSI still be on a voluntary basis?" he said.

The voluntary character of the debt restructuring is important to avoid triggering the pay-out of insurance against a Greek default.

While the sums of such insurance appear relatively small, euro zone officials said, such a "credit event" could trigger a chain reaction of events that would entail rapid and large scale contagion in euro zone debt markets, and is thus best avoided.

NEW RESCUE FUND

After dealing with Greece, euro zone ministers will choose a replacement for European Central Bank Board member Jose Manuel Gonzales Paramo, whose term ends in May.

The 17 ministers of the euro zone will then be joined by 10 ministers from the other European Union countries to finalise a treaty setting up the euro zone's permanent bailout fund - the 500 billion euro European Stability Mechanism (ESM). Its predecessor, the EFSF, is widely viewed as insufficient.

The ESM is another crucial element in the bloc's efforts to end the sovereign debt crisis that threatens to engulf Spain and Italy after claiming Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

The fund should boost market confidence in euro zone defences should Spain or Italy need emergency financing. Separately, the IMF has launched a proposal to boost its war chest by $600 billion.

IMF head Christine Lagarde is to discuss this during a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday. She will make a speech on Monday in which she is expected to urge euro zone leaders to act quickly while acknowledging it is not merely Europe's problem because "innocent bystanders" will also be hit by a worsening debt crisis.

The 27 EU finance ministers will also prepare the final draft of another treaty to sharply tighten fiscal discipline in the euro zone, called the fiscal compact, that is designed to ensure another sovereign debt crisis cannot happen in future.

EU leaders are to sign off on both treaties on January 30, allowing the ESM to become operational in July.

To prepare for the January 30 summit, Merkel will meet European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on Monday evening.

Redbox, on-demand are how we like our movies

Damian Dovarganes / AP file

By Suzanne Choney

Redbox's kiosks are now the leading source of physical DVD rentals in the U.S., and video-on-demand accounts for one out of three paid movie rentals.

"Brick-and-mortar retail stores continue to cede movie-rental market share, as kiosks and digital-streaming rentals become more accepted by consumers," said The NPD Group Thursday.

"There's no doubt that Redbox has been the largest beneficiary of the collapsing brick-and-mortar store rental business, especially with ongoing Blockbuster store closings and the fact that there are also fewer independent stores than the prior year," said Russ Crupnick, senior vice president, industry analysis for The NPD Group, in a release.

Netflix remains the "dominant provider of paid digital movie rentals, posting a 55 percent share in the fourth quarter of 2011, though Netflix's share is down somewhat from the company's peak of 59 percent" in the second and third quarters of last year,?according to the?The NPD Group.

The research firm said U.S. consumer rental of movies in DVD and Blu-ray disc formats fell by 11 percent in 2011 from 2010. The leader for actual disc rentals was Redbox, which saw its unit volume up by 29 percent in 2011 over the year before.

Some consumers may have been driven to Redbox or video on demand after giving up on Netflix, whose price hikes last year angered consumers.

The company's "share erosion may have resulted from their recent well-publicized challenges with pricing, and from their now defunct Quikster (DVDs-only) experiment," Crupnick said. "However, they are in the process of shifting customers to their Watch Instantly option, so not all of the physical movie rental share drop is a net loss."

The movie rental market is "clearly undergoing a sea change, as consumers become better equipped to access on-demand and streamed movies and are more comfortable with available delivery options," he said. But, he added, "Even so, renting physical discs from now-ubiquitous kiosks in grocery stores and other venues has taken the lead as the most popular movie-rental method in the U.S."

"Now-ubiquitous" is right, for Redbox. You can't, it seems, go a block or past a grocery store or drugstore without finding the red kiosks, almost as prevalent as Starbucks. One down side is that when you're at the kiosk, if something goes wrong during the purchase process, you can be stuck (despite an 800 number to call that often results in a long, long wait) ? something you don't want to do standing near a parking lot.

Canon EOS C300 cinema cam gets pre-order status, ships at month's end for $16,000

Back in November we joined Martin Scorsese and other Hollywood luminaries at Paramount Studios for the unveiling of Canon's latest cinema video camera, which is now available for pre-order. The EOS C300, that aims to compete directly against the Reds of the world, carries a Super 35mm CMOS sensor capable of up to 4K resolution 1080p capture, and should be helped in large part by the company's top-shelf lenses; like the 14.5 - 60mm and 30 - 300mm. When we first met the C300 we told you it'd be priced at a hefty $20,000, but that's no longer the case, instead it'll cost a less painful $16,000 for the body only. The camera will begin shipping "after January 30th," and if it seems like a little too much for you, at least you can still watch our precious hands-on time with it.

Update: We've updated to clarify that while the sensor is 4K the camera only captures in 1080p.

'Glee'-Cap: Will Pops The Question

And he isn't the only one — check out our musical recap of the latest episode!
By Jim Cantiello

The cast of "Glee" on Tuesday's episode
Photo: FOX

Tuesday night's "Glee" was all about Will Schuester's proposal to longtime germaphobe girlfriend Emma, and since he apparently lacks any adult friends, he enlisted his glee-club "family" to help out. They pitched potential songs, ranging from a kick-ass "Moves Like Jagger/ Jumping Jack Flash" mash-up to a sensitive Rachel Berry cover of David Guetta and Usher's "Without You." But it was the girls' "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" that awakened Mercedes' old feelings for Trouty Mouth.

Meanwhile, Becky went after the man she loves — fellow handi-capable student Artie — and viewers sat and watched their brief relationship sour. Bummer. Bigger bummer? Finn's mom revealed the real way his soldier dad died. Biggest bummer? No Klaine.

It was an intense episode filled with belly laughs, several Kleenex-grabs, synchronized swimming, random guest stars and a shocking Finn/Rachel proposal cliffhanger. And it inspired this piano ballad musical "Glee"-cap. Hit play on the embedded video below to check it out, and sing along with the lyrics.

I think I hit my head while watching "Glee" this week
'Cause things got cray
A "Grease" homage, but Sam is way more buff than Travolta
And not as gay (happy)

Enter Coach NeNe Leakes
She's funnier and draggier than anything Eddie Murphy's done in years
Then Helen Mirren speaks as Becky's brain
I guess Ryan Murphy's "no guest stars" rule disappeared

Will asks the kids to pick a song for his proposal
'Cause he has no real friends and it's starting to freak me out
And in the last half-hour of the show, things got extra dark
And they tried really hard to bum me out

Surprise! Your dad died!
He OD'd thanks to PTSD from the Army
Not cool
Artie leads Becky on
She gets confused 'cause she has Downs
Then Artie almost drowns in a pool

I'm getting whiplash from the tone
LMAO-ing then, hell no, now I'm crying!
And then Finn proposed
NOOOOOOOOOOO!
If there's a double wedding, to the door I am heading

I think I hit my head while watching "Glee" this week
'Cause things got cray
It broke my mind so now I'll just be here
And dancing like Lana Del Rey

[Jim slowly turns in a circle, occasionally touching his hair, looking like a cat paralyzed in fear.]

What did you think of this week's "Glee"? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Stocks edge higher as unemployment claims fall

Financial markets were subdued Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, as investors awaited developments in Greece's debt-reduction talks with private creditors, a day after the International Monetary Fund revealed it was looking to get its hands on another half a trillion dollars to help it shore up a fragile global economy. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

(AP) ? Stocks rose in midday trading Thursday after a decline in applications for unemployment benefits and strong earnings reports from Bank of America and Morgan Stanley.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 35 points to 12,613 shortly after noon.

The number of people seeking unemployment benefits plunged last week to the lowest level since April 2008, the latest sign that the job market is strengthening. France and Spain also held successful bond auctions, easing worries about that region's two-year-old debt crisis.

Utilities companies were among the few industries to fall, an indication that investors are becoming more comfortable owning riskier stocks. Utilities, which were the best-performing industry last year, tend to pay higher dividends and fluctuate less than companies like Caterpillar Inc. and FedEx Corp., whose fortunes are more closely tied to the economic cycle. Financial technology companies each rose 1 percent, the most of the 10 industries tracked by the S&P 500 index.

In another sign that investors are shedding low-risk assets, the dollar and Treasury prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.97 percent from 1.90 percent late Wednesday.

Bank of America and Morgan Stanley each rose 5 percent after reporting results that were better than analysts had expected. BofA returned to profit in the fourth quarter while Morgan Stanley's loss was much less than forecast, thanks largely to better stock trading results.

Investors also drove up shares of Renewable Energy Group Inc., the nation's largest producer of biodiesel, in its market debut. The stock rose 1 percent after pricing below what the Iowa company had initially expected. It was the first initial public offering of the year.

Trading was halted in shares of photography icon Eastman Kodak after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The ailing company failed to find a buyer for its trove of 1,100 digital imaging patents.

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 rose 7 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,315. The Nasdaq composite rose 23 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,793.

Among other stocks making large moves:

? eBay Inc. rose more than 4 percent after the online auction company beat analysts' earnings forecasts and provided a healthy outlook for the year.

? Southwest Airlines Co. rose nearly 4 percent after it said its fourth-quarter net income and revenue jumped. Southwest said it expects strong revenue in the first quarter too, based on passenger-booking trends.

? Johnson Controls Inc., an auto parts and building equipment maker, fell 7 percent. The Milwaukee-based company reported earnings and revenue that fell short of Wall Street's forecasts. It also cut its estimate for its fiscal year earnings, blaming weaker auto production in Europe, a lower euro and poor demand for batteries.
